Anybody having trouble with most YouTube videos having streaming problems?

It's never been like this, but lately, it's getting near to being slower than a snail or not stream at all.

Can repro the problems on all three laptops in the house, even an iPod touch.

Equipment:
NETGEAR WGT624v4 (Factory settings, apart SPI being turned off)
VM Ambit on 20MB/s
Laptops all on W7 32bit, running Google Chrome on two and with one running Firefox (latest).

Any ideas, or is anyone else experiencing buffer problems too?

Yeah, recently YouTube videos have been taking longer to buffer, they never used to but it is not a VM problem as other connections I've used have been having the same problem, where by the position marker? at the bottom of the video goes past the red buffer line and then after a few seconds will then stop so that it can catch up

Yeah, it does it quite a lot.
Plays probably 3 seconds, stops, then wait for like another 3, plays, then stops.

Even on 480p (default setting)

I think it's more of an issue with YouTube myself cause they have been messing about with a lot of things recently like adding closed captions (CC) and stuff

I saw that the other day.
I even tried it out, but I think it's rather pointless as it never gets more than 60% (random guesstimate) of the words right lol.

But I guess accessibility is important, so when they do get it right, it will be a good feature to some users.

Are there any streaming tests on the internet at all to see if it's not just a problem with YouTube or something similar?

I dunno, you could try watching stuff from MySpace video or Facebook and see if you have any issues streaming on them

Same here, the site was down for a few hours yesterday, and today I keep having to hit pause and wait for the video to load first before playing it, which seems to take ages.

Looks like it's happening to quite a few people then.

I've given up trying to stream Youtube lately, it's become so poor.
Now I download the videos via KeepVid (http://keepvid.com/)...

Anyone know anyone on non-cable connections that are having problems too?
Or is it limited to cable connections?

Youtube is currently in read only mode, which normally means they have some form of a problem

Youtube seems to be down ATM for me. No big loss.
Some might say that the Internets just gained +1 IQ point.

I rarely come to this website - but came here today after having such incredible problems last night with youtube. TBH I have had a problem with youtube at night for a few months - though last night was particularly bad. i also occasionally have issues with BBC news videos.

Funnily enough Youtube is working great right now (but i am normally at work during the day)

Cheers,
Scoobies

tried this earlier after seeing this thread and in my opinion youtube works very well on virgin media. I will try to test it tonight but personally I think youtube themselves are overloading some of their servers, google is losing a lot of money on that service so they probably not too motivated to spend on upgrades on it.

Since moving over to Virgin Media 10 MB broadband, we quite often experience poor YouTube performance in the evening, whereas the 2 MB BT connection in my office works much quicker. A 17 second clip took nearly a minute to buffer completely on VM a couple of nights ago, but at work the same clip was as good as instantly buffered. Imagine how poor YouTube is for clips that are bigger on VM.

well I can tell you in the evenings the slow buffering for youtube occurs on easynet who are themselves very high quality.

youtube use local caching servers for streaming so it is possible your work place used a different server that VM customers use.

I find it's a lot easier to just install Downloadhelper (the firefox plugin/addon), then manually download the clip and watch it locally

For some reason it downloads AOK and reasonably fast, but it won't buffer/play properly when streamed via the net, in any browser.

Hey everyone

They are introducing a new layout over the duration of the day.
No idea if it will improve video experience, but it's much more streamlined.

If it hasn't appeared for you yet, go to
http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2010/01/video-page-gets-makeover.html

and follow the link in the post saying opt-in.

:)

dont opt-in that beta layout is aweful.

problems I had.

1 - it forces autoplay on everytime you load a video so when it finishes it starts playing other videos. if you turn it off, its on again when you next load a video.
2 - usually when you click somewhere else on the screen whilst the video is playing cpu usage goes to 100% and the video freezes, if you then hover the mouse over the video it starts playing again and cpu usage goes back to normal, move the mouse off the video and it freezes again with max cpu usage. others have reported this bug as well.
3 - the layout changes seem less efficently laid out, I get the impression this is a change made for the sake of making a change. subscribe button hidden away, can no longer rate 1 to 5 stars, if you say you like the video it also adds it to your favourites.

use a firefox plugin called Mytube, it pauses the video untill it is fully buffered.

YouTube has been slow lately, but i've noticed using Speedbit Video Accelerator the problem seems to go away.

www.videoaccelerator.com (http://www.videoaccelerator.com)

Its free and doesn't install any Adware or Spyware. I think on some installs it prompts you to install a toolbar, or Google Chrome, but you can opt out of installing it.

Noticed this happening on both my laptop and iphone...Where as little as a couple of weeks ago i could watch long videos withoput having to buffer , now im having to pause and let it get ahead of itself.

Chrysalis

if I understand it right that accelerator will make your pc use multiple youtube mirrors to stream instead of just the local one, clever idea.

Same thing happens for me too. I use an iPod touch and even with my 50meg connection the streaming is terrible.
