I usually get good readings from there, max file is 1GB though.

try a iso file from a torrent.
Make sure there is lots of seeders and low level of peers.

Give one those a try, Microsoft seem to have more bandwidth than anyone else, unsurprisingly, I'm only on 20meg but if you or someone could try and max their 50meg with those demos it would be useful for future reference.

I downloaded XP SP3 last night using a download manager. 316MB...

Line was maxed at 2.42MB/s solid for just over 2 minutes. No fluctuations. So MS is a good choice, just find a big enough download and use a good download manager so it can get multiple streams going :)

the VM test site was a joke when I got mine and only gave me 25mbits. I ran a couple of www.speedtest.net trying the different servers in the UK and they gave me 50mbit every time.

The Dublin server in Speedtest.net always maxes out the internet. I've seen this > 50Mpbs before on University networks

I find this speedtester to be very consistent.

Download Failed (1) (http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk)

However many testers including this one are Java based so the speed of your PC may affect the result.

You should try this site, speedtest.net:

http://www.speedtest.net/

It gave me a download speed of 50.60 Mb/s, but use the london server as it's the only one that will work with 50meg BB. You can also see the download speed if you open the task manager whiel you perform the test. It show how much of you connection you are using.

When I use www.speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net) I found the servers to give lots different results, you need a good http site, torrents are not the best way to check your speed, have you tryed using a newsgroup as I have always maxed out my connection using VM 's newsgroups via grabit.

What difference does it make, you can see the actual bandwidth being used in the task manager and you see it goes to 50Mb/s?

That Microsoft one seems quite a fast link, although it was up and down all the way, try downloading 2 things at once from 2 sites and add the transfer rates together.
