Hi guys, I have upgraded my 10Mb L package to the 20Mb XL package. Virgin are sending me a new N Router apparently.

No with my current router (WGR 614v9) & dongle (Netgear WG111v3) I can only achieve around 2000KB/s on the newsgroups as opposed to 2400KB/s when im hard wired.

What I would like to know is, will the new router make my speed up to 2400 or will I need a new dongle as well?

Cheers guys.

If your computer is wireless g then the d-link router will send out a g signal. You will probably need a N dongle

You should be able to get full speed with your existing gear.
A 20mbps connection through a potential 54mbps link gives you plenty of headroom.

How far from your router is the computer in question?
What structures are in the way?

My own furthest computer (from router) has a USB extension cable with its wireless USB adapter double-sided-taped to a wall, at about head height in the 10 o'clock position, in order to get the best signal.
In other words, wireless adapters (particularly USB) can be quite directional.
(It may be easier to reposition your router)

You should upgrade anyway though, to get better LAN speed, if you move files between your own computers locally.

Thank you very much. Moved the dongle & hey presto 2370KB/s! :dunce:

Quick note - Wireless G doesn't give 54Mbps, best case it gives 20-25Mbit due to overheads so getting full speed on 20Mbit is running very well :)
