wtf is going on

The current rumours seem to suggest a problem with the PS3 handling leap years.

Today is the first even non-leap year since the PS3 was launched and the problem is affecting online and offline consoles.

Hopefully after 24 hours it'll sort itself out. If not

I'd expect a firmware update sometime soon.

Hopefully Sony's dev teams will be into full swing fixing and testing the bug.

Not going to gloat because -

1. I'm not a xbox fanboy.

&

2. I know the pain when your console goes wrong (x2). :(

Read about this on joystiq. I was playing Heavy Rain to late lastnight and didnt seem to get any problems. I have the 120GB now which seems to be uneffected luckily. A friend of mine with the 80GB model is texting me saying he's lost his user name ? (trying to get more info, he's not very technically minded) Very strange.

Just as Sony were finally starting to get a grip with the PS3 something like this happen's. Either way their not going to come out of this unhurt but if they can fix the damage done its going to hurt a little less.

yeah if they can fix it quickyl it will help alot BUT if this is long lasting it will do so much damage indeed to sony and the ps3

Fixed itself. There would have been a lot of squeaky bums in Sony HQ waiting for it to click over to midnight so they could see if it fixed itself.

Sony are taking the credit.:D

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8544675.stm

Sony has said that a millennium-style bug that prevented thousands of PlayStation 3 owners from using its online games network has been resolved.
The firm said that the fault had been caused by machines that had "recognised the year 2010 as a leap year".

Sony not fixed it regardless what they said its merely moved from the error problem date.

As Sony admitted the Fat Ps3's have an errored internal syc clock which has been programmed to take a leap year every even year. Sony admitted 20 million consoles is effected.

It did not happen in 2006 because ps3 did not launch until november usa region. PAL launched much later mar 2007.

in 2008 we had a leap year so it correctly passed it.

2010 we got an error because it assumed march the first was 29 feb it dont exist so Ps3 went down like the titanic.

Simply waiting till error date passes is not a good thing although it may correct itself we may have hidden issues. One is the internal sync clock maybe now looking a day late.

What happens in 2014 we face another even year which is not a leap year. Sony may not be in position to be able to flash errored code if its only write once chip as to stop pirates flashing. Using firmware to fool it may not work or be a good solution. As they use the internal Sync clock as part of its protection they actually may hinder them rectifing it.

However although cant find it there was talk SONY my take a hit and upgrade all fats to slim but realistically thats going to be rather costly. Questions will be raised if a class a action suit is impending as the fault still there and the only way is mass recall to take out faulty rom chip.

I'm sure they'll work it into the next update - which will likely be quite soon anyway
