can u post the modem power levels?

u can get them typing 192.168.100.1 into ur browser address bar.

The upstream and downstream power levels.

DOWN
Power Level (dBmV) -4.36 -5.32 -5.42 N/A

Up
53.25 N/A N/A N/A

also it keeps sayin on my test Telewest Broadband? would that have anything to do with it?

Upstream's a bit high...but that shouldn't give you download speeds like that. Mine is 51.8dBmV and I get the full 20. (Downstream, is 8.4dBmV)

Don't trust speedtest.net. It's always given me stupidly low results. Although results are better with my browser minimised when it is testing. No idea why, I guess my CPU can't handle all the flash animation.

I find http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ is accurate, as is http://www.speed.io
What's http://www.pingtest.net saying about the quality of your line?

Also, to rule it out, connect direct to modem and turn off AV scanner/other scanners as they can slow things down while scanning in real time.

You are an EX-Telewest customer so that is correct, compare your power levels against this Sticky (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/34896851-post3.html) and check which QAM you are on as the Downstream appears to be a bit low for 50Mb.

You have tried alternative servers on speedtest.net and other speedtest sites havent you?

Also have you tried virgins ftp?

Try this for instance and tell us what speed you get.

Its good for 3.5MB/s here. it will at least give you some indication of whats happening internally anyway.

ftp://mirrors.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/blueyondergames/demos/bfme2demo_english_final.exe

Also give these a go.

http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html
http://www.broadband.co.uk/broadband-speed-test/

Obviously theres loads more and they will all vary, but a culmination of results would give a more overall picture of your connection speed rather than one test on speedtest.net :)

Also not forgetting the speed test on these forums :)

Don't you just love how professional the installers were in that they left this guy in this sort of state? Well worth the 30 quid fee.

I have someone coming out this week "free of charge" to sort it out. just wish they would of done that in the first place rather than just leaving it like this. i haven't got a clue about anything like this!

Virgin's installation staff are near as damnit minimum wage and have no clue what they are doing, that should pretty much explain your issues.

I am pleased to see you accept the predicament you find yourself in. Please feel free to bang your head on the sympathetic but pointless Indian support line at this time.

Can't disagree about near minimum wage :)

However the installer should have done a speedtest, it has to be at least 40meg to pass, if it doesn't then we can't leave until it does! (unless network problem).

If ur signals are fine and your not getting the speeds what is the installer to so it's clearly a fault with vm server side of things

A lot's been said without the OP's full modem stats. The SNR and codeword styats together with the event log (CM IP address removed) might help with opinions.
