Hi, I've had VM for around 8 months now, but since last month I've been having really annoying ping problems, my ping will go from just fine (10 ping on my css server) to 500 on the same server, then I will have really high ping for around half an hour and then it'll go back to normal, this keeps happening at random times during the day.

Here's a tracert I just did when my ping was going bad:

and here's one to the same server when the ping isn't going crazy.

I've also done speedtests while the ping is going crazy and both my upload and download speeds are normal but my ping is 200 - 700

While my ping has been going crazy I've tried doing a power cycle which helped for 1 minute and then the ping went sky high again.

ping just started spiking now, here's a speedtest: http://www.speedtest.net/result/726835433.png

The upstream isn't "normal" in that picture, unless that's what you're used to!
Should be 0.40 - 0.50Mb/s surely?
Obviously, Speedtest isn't absolute, but that's still low even if out by 100%.

Try:

http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/speedtest

and

http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk

as well (and maybe speedtest again, with a few different servers).

You might have a program running in the background using up your upload (p2p software).

Yeah, my upload goes down quite a bit when my ping spikes, but it's still low when my ping is being fine too..

Here's a speedtest when my ping is fine: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2010/02/8.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

and I got similar results on the speedtests linked by Spectato.

Here's the upstream and downstream power levels:

Upstream transmit Power Level : 48.5 dBmV
Downstream Receive Power Level : 5.9 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 41.1 dB

and here's the event log:

Few minutes after this post the ping went crazy again, not that big of a drop on the upload this time though: https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2010/02/9.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

I would post on newsgroup support. Explain and problems with intermittent drop offs in upload speed and bad lag spikes and they should check your connection out.

When gaming, you're rapidly sending small packets. Not much bandwidth but you need the upstream timeslots on demand.

A congested node (street box or UBR) will prevent that happening. Cause of congestion? Read the forum! It can be anything, but often poor load balancing and / or oversubscription.
