hi,

Had a faultless 2009 experience here in Reading (winnersh) with 10mb cable.

But in last month browsing has become painfull. e.g. amazon uk and Google pages can take 5-10 secs to come up. Its pretty random.

Yet my downloading and COD4 ping play are still strong. But starting to suspect my COD4 ping is more variable and higher than it used to be.

Switched to openDNS. A little better.
Tried setting proxy to webcache.virgin.co.uk 8080 but its worse.

pinged first outside virgin router hop 0% loss 6ms average.
and bbc.co.uk 10% loss 11ms average.

These seem fine according to sticky.
Type : Ambit ETH/USB Combo Cable Modem
Cable modem : Ambit Cable Modem
Downstream Receive Power Level : 0.18 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 33.73 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 53.00 dBmv

Looks like Virgin routing problem?

Downstream SNR is a bit on the low side, especially given Reading isn't, I don't think, all digital yet.

Do you have a traceroute?

Routing is an either / or thing. Either you can reach a site or you can't it doesn't make sites slow it makes them inaccessible so I think it's a bit closer to home.

Thank you.

sorry Broadbandings just read you loath pathping.

Don't worry about BBings loathing pathping! It's highly instructive. I'm from Winnersh (northern half) and have had no problems.

Which street is your cabinet on?

Can you please post the full modem stats and event log. ALSO go to the CONNECTION link at the top of the page and paste your CMTS (remove the customer number and don't paste the IP address).

btw - I can see no difficulty with the pathping result.

First pathping *spit* shows nothing wrong, second shows packet loss beginning at the interconnect between Virgin and OneandOne who host CF.

hi,

Francis Street (Off Elgar Road) RG1 2xx

Took me ages to find how to get event logs (P_log.htm, why isn't it a sticky!)especially with pages taking 10 secs sometimes!

Ask Virgin for a new modem. That one is a bit dubious for 10Mbps service.

I appreciate that, never got around to the fight it will take. Only caused problem with torrenting which I don't do anymore (switched to Windows 7 RC ). Been on 10mb for years.

In November after sorting a billing issue with CS she asked is there anything else I could help you with. I said can I have a new modem. She "of course, we'll send one out"! Waiting patiently...

Shouldn't take a fight, put a post on the newsgroups and they'll get one couriered out to you with grande vitesse.
