Will she be a more confident assistant or a more naive, damsel type assistant? I don't like the latter.

There are some so-called 'fans' on a certain members-only Doctor Who forum who are already shooting him down, based on the trailer.

The BBC won't pull the rug out from under him though. It isn't the 1980s any more, and Michael Grade has nothing to do with what's shown on BBC1 any more. ;)

Stephen

I had my doubts but now after watching the trailer a few times and the regen scene, I really can't wait for the new series!

I think Moffat has got things spot on. There even appears to be silurians in the trailer(well they look a bit like them)

Doesn't the BBC have most of the matches? But then it all depends on the channel which is usually BBC1?

None of the games clash with the show's usual time slot. I don't think there'll be a problem.

There are a *lot* of fans that think the show has changed too much from the old show, and they seem to moan about every little thing. There's also the fact that some people seem to moan about every doctor because he's not as good as the last one..

I'm not one of them. I can accept that the old series had it's highs and lows, as does the new series.

the Doctor with a Gun and punching someone. And at least 2 clips of ALex Kingston in the trailer

Wouldn't be the first time The Doctor has used a gun. At the end of Earthshock, he blasts a cyberman several times with a blaster, not to mention the end of the episode "Dalek" where the Doctor is pointing a Gun at a Dalek, with Rose between them saying "but he's not the one pointing a gun at me".

Well, we have had Chris Ecclestone, I was dubious about him as the doctor at first, but ended up impressed. Then David Tennant, again I was dubious, but he was superb. Catherine Tate as an assistant, I didn't think she would be any good, and I was right. Now we have a prepubescent doctor. I could be wrong, time will tell, but I don't think he will fill the shoes of his predecessors.
I am going to give it a try, and hopefully it won't be a waste of film like the past 2 bond movies were, or the new star trek movie.

Steven Moffat has also confirmed that none of the major characters from the Russell T. Davies era of Doctor Who will appear in his first series.

The has previously revealed that the Weeping Angels, Daleks and Silurians will feature in Matt Smith's first year as The Doctor, but ruled out a return of the human characters introduced by his predecessor

I suspect by 'major characters' he's meaning recurring characters like Rose, Mickey, Martha, Donna, Wilf etc. So far as the likes of River Song (and maybe even Jenny) are concerned, I think it's still game on.

Dr Who comes to Swansea: http://www.swansea.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=36001

"The Dr Who road show is in Castle Square 1-3 April, from 11am - 4pm and is a free event"

"Fans of the show can look forward to exclusive footage of the new show on the BBC Big Screen, including the chance to see the Doctor Who trailer in 3D – and giveaways, and fans can also get their photo taken tumbling through the giant vortex.

Visitors will be able to meet some of the scariest monsters that have had viewers watching from behind their sofa for generations as well - but they'll be up close and personal!"

It really has a clssic Who feel to it and apparently the 70's/80's background TARDIS sound effects are back :)

Even the roundels look a lot like the 80's versions with the way they are styled.

I look forward to the new theme tune and opening credits, with all this classic Who stuff I wonder if we will get The Doctors Face in the titles!

The ins and outs of production slates is an argument you really ought to be having over on Gallifreybase (http://gallifreybase.com/forum/index.php?). Season 5 is a perfectly logical way of referring to it and is what we will be sticking to around here. ;)

Paul
31-03-2010, 12:35
Can I just add it's not season 5
Correct, its Season 31. However, its popularly known as Season 5 (of the revived series) and will remain titled as such here.

Correct, its Season 31. However, its popularly known as Season 5 (of the revived series) and will remain titled as such here.

Actually I think he was referring to the production team's decision to refer to the new season internally as '1' again. Have a look out for the clappers on Confidential this Saturday and you might spot it. I'm not sure whether they've done it because of the new Doctor or the new production team, but it's a tad confusing either way.

Stephen
31-03-2010, 12:47
Can I just add it's not season 5
Well.......... there are three ways to look at it

Its Season 31 going by the total time that Who has been running

or its Season 5 since it started back again in 2005

also the new production team called it series 1 when they were filming as its their first series with the new team.

:D

So its is season 5 or 31 or 1 which ever way you look at it. :p:

Totally agree, for the first time it's lost the Doctor Who signature theme.

The theme was the definition of Doctor who, revamped time and time again since Delia Derbyshire created the definitive sound.
Not sure about the filming style either.

04-04-2010, 07:43
I loved the episode itself but the theme is rubbish.
I thought I was going to hate the new doc, but he seems to have made the part his own and still has the 'Dont mess with me' attitude.
I was a little confused to why a copper was wearing a mini skirt, then got more confused when the wife hit me for commenting :dozey:

Loved everything, even the theme tune. Yes its different but the proper tune is still there and if you listen to the full version on the BBC site the middle eight is there too.

Also remember the 96 movie, that had a big build up before the delia tune kicked in.

New TARDIS is amazing. Looks so good in HD.

Stuart
05-04-2010, 02:50
Actually, being pedantic here, but the tune was composed by Ron Grainer. The original was arranged and performed by Delia Darbyshire. She also created the famous Woo-ooo-ooo noise by looping bits of tape and playing them at different speeds.

Edit: You can see all the title sequences upto and including David Tenant's at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuH4y3tbG0g

And yes, I did enjoy the episode. Unusually, the series hit the ground running, apart from some bad camera work.

Matt Smith: Could be a good Doctor. Came across as possibly being slightly creepy, which could be good.

Karen Gillen: Amy is nicely inquisitive . Seems like she could get herself into some interesting situations. Looks good as well. Actually, she seems very much like the young Sarah Jane Smith in this regard.. I've seen Karen in other stuff as well, and she is a good actress. Particularly good at accents (something which they took advantage of in this episode).

The new Tardis: Looks good. And they've already mentioned it has other rooms, so maybe we'll see a few. It always bugged me that in the RTD era, the Tardis only seemed to have one room, where as in classic who, they hinted that it had thousands of rooms. In fact, IIRC, Tom Baker (in The Keeper of Traken) mentions that he is jettisoning 1,000 rooms or 10% of the rooms in the Tardis.

As for the new theme tune, well, I don't insist that any Doctor who theme has the woo-oo-oo sound (I liked the Davison era theme and that didn't have it), but this theme seems like they had a lot of ideas for a theme, couldn't decide which one to use, so used all of them. Too much going on musically for my liking.

Possibly, but in the original, they showed many more. The ones I recall are bedrooms for Adric, Nyssa and Romana, a Garden, the swimming pool (which was at least mentioned), a medical centre , the wardrobe and a few corridors.

Not forgetting the alternative "wooden" control room.

Also I'm sure I remember an episode, a Baker one I think, were they went into the deepest bowles of the tardis.

Also the '96 tardis had big gothic rooms with a massive staircase.

Smith actually reminds me of McGanns doctor.

I didn't like the start sequence, I like the old one more because the music gave it a sort of menace, the new one is to nice.

I read somewhere, ages ago (so it could have been part of the hype for the show) that the Tardis control room as used in the 96 movie actually got closest to the appearance the show's creator wanted. Apparently he wanted a sort of Jules Verne time machine look, but the BBC decided it didn't look space age enough.

I must be sad, Ive watched 3 times now, my only gripe is the tardis doors opening outward.

I saw one episode where the Doctor, Leela and a couple of Gallifreyans are being chased through the bowels of the Tardis by some Sontarans. I remember a about three or four scenes where they run past the same swimming pool, and the Dr swears he knows where he is going.

Also there is the scene in Logopolis what the Doctor acidentally materialises his tardis around the Master's tardis, which apparently causes an infinite number of tardises to exist on the same spot.

In the first one thay said something about a crack in time.

In the second at the end with the space whale there was a "crack" on the side of the ship.

I reckon that it might get bigger or smaller, I say that as it might adjust in size depending on where in time The Doctor is.

Not sure. The theme music is still rubbish, Matt Smith's laugh is annoying as hell and he comes across as having less personality than a cyberman, plus the camera work is terrible, the flashthrough scenes "What did I miss" just don't work.

Matt Smith's doctor seems to be sylvester mccoy without the personality. Thank whatever deity you like Karen Gillan isn't another bonnie langford. Plus the new sonic screwdriver seems to be the love child of a sonic screwdriver and a prize grab machine. If it gets any larger it's going to have to become the sonic jackhammer.

Having watched both episodes back to back, I must say that I am hopeful for Matt Smith. I was a bit unsure, during the run-up, but I am pleased so far. I also don't like the new music, but then, having spent the last few decades listening to the original, I can't be blamed for thinking that. The comment about Sly McCoy, is relevant, in that a being who regenerates has to contain some constituent parts of their former selves; I got some David Tenant, Patrick Troughton, Sylvester McCoy and Chris Eccleston myself.

Indeed, as Janet Fielding (Teegan in Classic who) said in one of her commentaries, the assistants in the classic series where frequently there as plot devices, as someone for the Dr to explain some plot point to. She said that she actually likes the way that new Who actually does build the companions (as they are now) into full, 3d, characters complete with outside relationships and backgrounds.

Thinking about it, I agree. Not in all cases (Romana was a companion who was as much of an integral character as the Dr, for instance), but in a lot.

I would like to formally complain about the addition of an On-Screen Banner to Doctor Who, during the climax of today's episode, advertising the next programme (Over the Rainbow).

While watching Doctor Who (or any other programme), I do not wish to have my viewing interrupted or spoiled by the intrusive appearance of a large cartoon version of Graham Norton, especially near the end of an episode, when the tension is being ratcheted up.

It is bad enough when you interrupt the end credits of a programme to advertise the following programme, but to interrupt & intrude upon the actual programme itself is completely unacceptable.

I don't suppose there's an mp3 (legit of course) of the new theme so I can use it as my ringtone.

I know most people think it's crap and all that = but I want it lol.

I have made an mp3. The BBC who site has a version you can listen to on there, so I used a program on my Mac to record the stream :)

I didn't really see a lot of it (the subtitles were one which obscured a lot of it), but I *really* hope the BBC don't go down this route. I'd prefer that they don't have any captions on screen, but if they have to, at least make them small and tasteful like those used on ITV.

---------- Post added at 11:55 ---------- Previous post was at 11:53 ----------

Fine episode apart from that. Some double or triple episodes I have seen in various SciFi shows feel like they have stretched the story of one episode to fit in two or three. This really didn't. If anything, the first episode felt like it had too much in it.

Yup. Only on BBC1 in England (& the live iPlayer stream).

Not in Wales, not in Scotland, not on BBC HD.

I would hope that, given the sheer level of anger this has generated, they will realise that it's best not to do it again...

The BBC is not Sky. It's not ITV. It's not some stupid US Network. It's the bloody BBC. We expect better, and deserve better, from our publicly funded public service broadcaster, especially when it is showing its flagship Saturday evening show on its main channel. To have an on-screen banner at any time is ridiculous enough as it is, but to have one pop up right at the climax of the episode, spoiling the tension & immersion, is utter stupidity.

Very good episode though, yep. Raises some interesting questions too regarding River.

Yeah, I saw that.

The BBC often promotes programmes in this way but the corporation has acknowledged that in this case the scheduling was inappropriate.

A BBC spokesman said: "We apologise for the timing of Saturday night's trail."

Not good enough, IMO. All they're apologising for is the timing, there's no apology for using a banner in the first place, & no promise that they won't use one again.

At last, 4 episodes in, they finally deliver a decent episode.

For my money, the weeping angels are the no.1 Dr Who scary monster.

Looking forward to part two, I hope Moffat hasn't inhereited RTDs knack of making a good part 1 and then completely tossing it up in a lame part 2.

Yep, I got the standard reply too. Unfortunately I think in all the focus on last Saturday's mess, they may miss the important, wider point: that it is incredibly annoying to see promos of this kind on top of any programme, not just Doctor Who. It's just disrespectful of all the people who worked to make the programme and contemptuous of the viewers who tuned in to watch and enjoy the show, not to sit and be advertised at.

Totally :tu:

Squeezing the end credits, or simply talking over them, is also extremely annoying, and something I wish all broadcasters would stop doing.

Banners ("IPPs" according to people at DS) like we had on Saturday really are the worst intrusion though. And it is bad enough when the commercial channels do this sort of US-style nonsense, but for the BBC to do it - on anything - is just plain wrong. It's a publicly funded public service broadcaster & should not be doing all this sort of self-promoting commercial rubbish.

When I see these sort of things, I get the impression that the broadcasters consider myself and all the other viewers to be idiots.

Especially as the sole purpose of the show being trailed is to provide advertising for some west end show, which, IMO, violates the BBC no advertising rule anyway.

Nice additions to this series' arc too... More on the crack, with confirmation of earlier fan speculation that Amy is tied to everything somehow. And River... Interesting... I wonder if she "killed" The Doctor?

I've grown to like Matt, I didnt like it when Tennant took over then I thought he was great, the same has happened here for me. I'm going to be gutted when this series ends.

River Song is a big part of it but I'm wondering if the Doc is too obvious a choice with who she killed

I wasnt that impressed with last nights show, I think it was down to the bad acting of the girls when acting like vampires that I wasnt keen on but Im looking forward to next weeks.
