what does this error actually mean?

2009-11-19 10:45:18 5-Warning 0x040DC1A0 DHCP REBIND WARNING - Field invalid in response

i am familiar with its counterpart

2009-10-30 12:06:16 5-Warning 0x040DC13C DHCP RENEW WARNING - Field invalid in response

but the REBIND one is new to me. only one occurrance but it recurs each day the IP renews as far as i can tell for the last couple of weeks.

no connectivity issues afaik either. in fact the modem levels are far better now than a month ago.

surfboard 5100 modem. no router. direct cable connection.

safe to ignore?

Safe to ignore. Thre's a server DHCP glitch AFAIK.

Sounds like it's related to the binding of you DHCP allocated IP address and the MAC address of the connected equipment. Nothing to worry about AFAIK.

Yep - if the original granting server doesn't respond to the DHCP renew request the client will go through a rebind process, which is pretty much starting from the beginning of the process. It can happen through something like VM migrating you to a new DHCP server, the old one is gone so you have to do a rebind instead of a renew.

Here's a nice summary of the two, with pretty pictures so schmucks like me can understand it: The TCP/IP Guide - DHCP Lease Renewal and Rebinding Processes (http://www.tcpipguide.com/free/t_DHCPLeaseRenewalandRebindingProcesses-2.htm)

I get that now after a power cut in my area.

When the power came back the internet wasn't working and when virginmedia got it working, in the modem logs, the first event was DS re-scanning of the downstream or something to that effect.

And how has it impacted your connection, so that you need to wake an aging thread?

No impact, I just wanted to add the same that it appears it's safe to ignore.
It was the first time I have seen that message.
Sorry I should have added this the first time.

Perhaps if adding a reply to this thread upsets so much it may require to be closed.

Oh right.

My mum, sister and brother have had this error, their connection suffered no loss either.
