Hi

I have a ntl cable modem 250.

I contacted Virgin Media around 3 months ago and they asked me to use the usb to connect to the internet which I did.

The problem is that I have recently brought a Belken wireless router and want to use the ethernet link instead. I plugged the cable directly onto the ethernet port of the cable 250 and this did not work. I contacted Virgin faults and said that it was a driver issue and my computer was faulty. I find this hard to believe because the same computer ethernet works fine at my brothers house. I then tried a laptop ethernet connection and this also did not work as well as different ethernet cables.

None of these things worked. When I explained that to Virgin they hung up. I didnt bother to ring back as I waited over an hour to get through the first time round.

When the ethernet cable is plugged in, the power lights come on as well as the sysnc nd ready light but not the enet light. when the usb is used the usb light is on.

Any suggestions?

Take the power lead out of the modem for 10 seconds and put it back in and it should see the computer.

Also make sure USB isn't plugged in at the same time as ethernet

Call tomorrow as soon after 0800 as possible to try and get a UK agent as ethernet does not use drivers and you may need a new modem.

ok I spoke to Virgin today and after one and a half hours still only managed to get an overseas agent. well I think persudad him to get them to send me a new router but they insisted that it would not work because i do not have a network adaptor!!!!

What makes of router are Virgin sending out these days that you need a network adaptor?

Sounds like they are sending out a wireless router, you probably confused him if you mentioned that you connect via USB.

At the moment they're also sending out Scientific Atlanta EPC2100s which does have a usb port but definitely wouldn't recommend using usb.

Is that in NTL and TW areas or just TW?

just a thought.....did they check with you that the network card drivers are installed..via system and device manager in the contol panel, that would explain why ethernet doesnt work

Depends who he talked to and I am not taking any bets.

we checked that. the pc works at my brothers house on his ntl home 200 via thernet connection, so wouldn't hae thought it could be a network card driver issue. Even though Ntl the first time insisted that it was.

sounds to me that the ethernet port on the modem is the fault. are you able to take the modem to your brothers house and swap them over to check if the issue is the same, ie, the ethernet light not coming on. i'm not sure if you'd be able to browse the net or get any kind of connection using the modem at another address, but the enet light would still light up.

I tried that today. The faulty 'modem' ethernet light did NOT come on. It's got to be the modem
