Help! Packet loss/upload problem

Hi

at a bit of a dead end, if I had any hair left I'd have pulled it all out :) Anyway, I can't seem to upload anything e.g. uploads to flickr stall at 99%, and attachments to gmail fail. I've tried Yousending stuff and that fails too. OK. I can browse the internet fine. I've tried connecting directly to my cable modem (ambit 256) and the same happens.

Doing a pathping shows that all packets are being dropped at the UBR (hop '2') - took me a while to figure this out (someone tell me if I'm wrong? I think 10.* is the 'me' facing side of the ubr?). The question is, is this important? Is there something wrong with my modem or with the UBR, or am I on the wrong track? I just can't get through to technical support, I don't have a landline with virgin, and I can't afford to sit in a queue for an hour... (sorry for the moans people). And if this isn't the issue, what is? I'm in Saltburn, Teesside if that helps. And thanks for anyone who replys in advance.

Pathping results posted below. I ran it a couple of days ago when first looking at your post and noticed the 100% loss at the "me" side of the UBR. IMO that's a firewall issue blocking ICMP packets. You'll notice that they are in fact, sent.

IMO, Pathping won't tell you why you stall at 99%.

The other thing you need to know is that your upload is either FTP or TCP. With FTP and TCP there is no packet loss - only re-transmissions.

Can you let us know your PC type, OS and anti-virus/anti-malware solutions you have running? This is going to be a difficult one, I think.

scone2 - have you tried using a different web browser for your upload?

The test you've shown there is fine, yes there is 100% packet loss to hop 2 but 0% loss to all following hops, nothing to indicate that the issue is within the cable network.

Try a different web browser, perhaps also update Java (http://www.java.com/) and Flash. (http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/)

Thanks so much guys. Good points on interpreting pathping - yes they all do get through to hops down the line! Thanks for that link Sephiroth.

I've tried different browsers but I will retry later when I get home - I use Chrome v.3.0.something. I'll try with IE/Firefox. I use Nod32 antivirus and Comodo personal firewall (Windows firewall disabled). I don't have any anti-malware proggys running. I believe I tried disabling the firewall and antivirus with no effect but again, will try again later - and I'll update flash & Java too.

I have a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop running Vista Home Premium.

I've connected to 'other' :) wireless networks around me at home with no success also. I tried to set up a Ubuntu install in VirtualBox but couldn't get it working (thought I'd see whether it was a Windows thing). Also had no luck setting up a dual boot when I tried some time ago, I think there is some issues with my laptop vs. Linux.

Ahh ok - if you've done 'other' wireless networks around you as well it does point to your machine. Sometimes even if you disable AV / firewalls they will still happily mess with what you're doing.

If you feel up to it try a total uninstall and reboot after of Comodo / Nod32 and see if that resolves the problem.

No worries hope it works, it certainly does sound like a firewall / AV playing silly buggers given that everything else seems to work alright.
