Hi iv been contacting Vm support about speed issues. I’m on a 20 Meg line and only receive about 1.7 Mbps in non peak about 0.5 Mbps during peak (according to 3 different servers on speedtest.net, downloading from the games.virginmedia site wouldn’t settle but gave me around 35 Kb/sec. This is from behind a router but connected directly to the modem gives similar results.

Anyway i sent Customer Support this trace route. (performed well directly connected to the modem)

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138] over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 40 ms 41 ms 84 ms 10.187.0.1
2 62 ms 45 ms 53 ms 80.235.128.36
3 85 ms 140 ms 95 ms 195.188.231.21
4 71 ms 74 ms 94 ms win-bb-b-ge-220-0.network.virginmedia.net [195.1
82.178.133]
5 65 ms 78 ms 84 ms win-bb-a-ae0-0.network.virginmedia.net [213.105.
172.161]
6 67 ms 71 ms 73 ms gfd-bb-b-so-100-0.network.virginmedia.net [213.1
05.172.130]
7 77 ms 83 ms 93 ms redb-ic-1-as0-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.253.
185.78]
8 93 ms 100 ms 89 ms 212.58.239.249
9 79 ms 80 ms 82 ms 212.58.238.149
10 75 ms 100 ms 86 ms virtual-vip.thdo.bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138]

Trace complete.

They replied a few days later saying

"Thank you for the trace route, it shows it taking a long time for
Information to leave your computer and get to the modem. " and asked me to perform a netstat.

However I am sceptical, I don’t think it does show that at all and they are just trying to pin the blame at my end. I have tried with 9 different computers all show the line to deliver extremely slow speeds.
I am convinced the slow speeds are due to over utilization of Vm's local network and posts on the news groups have confirmed this.

So in short please can someone give me a second option on what the trace route shows. many thanks

Ps. Sorry for such a long winded post I but all the background is there if you need it.

Hi there I'd probably suggest you use winmtr ( http://winmtr.sourceforge.net/ ) to see if there is packet loss on the hop from you modem to the UBR - could be a transmission problem ie. damaged cabling / splitters / f connectors

or the hop from your PC to the modem - faulty ethernet port or cable / faulty modem

Next step power levels please:

192.168.100.1 - root / root is the login - can you post power levels for up and downstream. Don't post your MAC address.

Can you provide a ping aswell please. Preferably connected directly.

A netstat would help Windows key + R - cmd type netstat -a again past the results.

Thanks guys i think there is a splitter somewhere as there is a vm point in the lounge for the tv and the one which where using for broadband on the 1st floor.I have spoken to the previous tennents of the house who said they got ok speeds from virgin.

Power levels
Downstream Channel Id : 0
Downstream Frequency : 331000000 Hz
Downstream Receive Power Level : -7.5 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 37.4 dB

Upstream Channel ID : 1
Upstream Frequency : 18800000 Hz
Upstream transmit Power Level : 52.5 dBmV

I though they looked ok but i know very little on this subject. is that all the ones you needed ?

Pings were performed behind a router but i can do it directly connected in a minute
Thanks again for your help.

Downstream power level is too low - should be between - 3 and 3.

Ping is high, likely because of this. You will need a tech to come and adjust the levels.

really? im on an ex telewest line i though between -12 to +12 was ok for them or does that refer to something else?

- 6 and +15 either way. It's too low

Which modem do you have? Your ping times are high and your traceroute has higher ping times than it should have getting to the modem.

My trace was done while downloading at 1958KB/s and the times are still better than yours, I'd be looking at the modem itself or cabling.

General rule of thumb for the whole network is +/- 5dBmV. Upstream is reaching a high level as well, so watch that. Mention it to the tech.
