Hi Guys wondering if one of our CS guys can advise here. My mate has recently been upgraded to 10Mb/s but is still on the ld Ambit USB modem. Can he be sent an ethernet modem FOC if he rings up?

All early Ambit modems have dual capability having both USB and Ethernet ports, which model does he have.

Wow Moldova you were quick.

As he lives over 200 miles from me and has gone out for the night you'll have to bear with me for more info. I'll acess his modem and see what it says as I'm allowed full remote control of his PC. I just notice the speed difference between his and another friend in the area who I acess on the same basis (both only when requested BTW).

I'll get back with details soon.

Just advise him to go to ASDA or Tesco's one of the larger stores and he can purchase a Ethernet cable for less than £3.

If he calls Tech Support on 151 from a Virgin phone line or 0845 454 1111 from any other phone he can enquire about swapping the modem if required.

I do not know the model codes but it will probably be one of the NTL100 series in this link.

@xocemp Quite correct it is one of the old NTL ones though as stated by Moldova should handle 10Mb/s easily. I think the bad ping times (double expected) are due to USB cable.
I'll get him to try an ethernet cable and see what happens.

Bad pings are due to USB - switch to ethernet. Should have dual capability. If not, give CS a call, see what you can wangle out of them

Lol to be fair, if you go to your local PC they are only a couple of quid. Although I say this very clearly DONT GO TO PC WORLD TO GET AN ETHERNET
