Hey im new to this so im not totally sure what to put here. I had 50mb installed a few days ago but the speeds im getting dont seem very impressive.
The best I ever download at is about 1000 kB/sec - very occasionally 2000. Most of the time its about 500. Im sure it should be faster than this. This is through the router both wirelessly and cabled, even more confusing is if I connect directly to the modem I download at 50kB and speedtest gives me a speed of only 1.5mb. And this never changes at all, its always that slow directly conncted to the modem. Im completely lost and have never had cable so dont know what most of the people on here are talking about - so I dont know what to look for etc.
If you could let me know if you need more information and ill provide it.

Thanks

What does www.vmspeed.com give you?

How are you downloading generally? Usenet ? Http?

Hey, I just tried the link you gave me.

Download Speed: 28019 kbps (3502.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1512 kbps (189 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 23 ms

Straight after this I tried downloading from my rapidshare premium account and was only getting 500kb download speed. I know it isnt rapidshare going slow as my friend is in the uni library and i got him to try at the same time and its going at 3100kb (which I know is about the student pc maximum download speed).
I tested the connection with my laptop directly connected to the modem and got this result.

Download Speed: 3250 kbps (406.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1580 kbps (197.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 25 ms

Surely this is very weird, I cant imagine how the router would be speeding things up.
I use the my connection mostly for downloading (rapidshare as you can probably guess). I also use it for wow and that has quite high latency. At any given time the speed of my download changes - even while downloading one moment its up over 1000 and then slips down to 300 and then goes back up. I had enough problems getting connected to start with and now this :(

As a very helpful VM employee who resides here called Moldova told me, there's a 50mb support line to call Virgin 0800 052 0431 best to call after 8am tomorrow. They can run diagnostics on your line.

I didnt realise there was a 0800 number available - that was the main problem with calling them for me. I only have a mobile pay as you go, and i dont have enough money to pay for the calls to an 0845 number from it. We have no landline (student house).

Thanks for you help, ill ring them tomorow. I just hope they get this sorted, Ive had enough of the total incompetance from some of the people ive had to deal with so far.

Its now crawling along at 5mbs - im so sick of this.

Do you or any of your housemates have free landline minutes on mobile? If so you should have a look at www.0800buster.co.uk/ to beat the mobile network charges for calling 0800 numbers. Im a student too so this is a godsend
