Hi there, excuse my ignorance but for years I have only dealt with standard BT line ADSL connections and it seems cable is quite a bit different.

Just over a week ago I signed up to a 20mb package with VM. Upon running the first speed test at 3am we got about 11-16Mbps. A couple of days ago VM claimed that we had exceeded the credit limit on our account (long story) and cut us off. Anyway, they reinstated it today, but we seem to only be getting 3Mbps which is pretty awful.

Is there anything I can do to increase the speed. I am connecting on wireless so I understand it [i]may be slower than the 20Mb I have paid for, but would still like it to be as high as it can be.

Some of the posts on here have people displaying the DB of the up/downstream power on their routers.... how do you get hold of this information? And what am I looking out for?

A little information about my current setup - VM modem > Netgear WRN2000 router (set to 54Mbps broadcast, channel 1). Signal on my PC/ xbox etc is 60%-90% signal (24-36Mbps+).

Thanks a lot.

Log into your modem by clicking here http://root:root@192.168.100.1/CmOpConfig.asp

Cable modem signal levels here http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/26006-cable-modem-signal-levels.html

Try setting the broadcast on your router to 145Mbps or 300Mbps.

If on 20Mb your Configuration page will show the following.

Cable Modem Operation Configuration
Network Access : Allowed
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 20480000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 768000
