We had VM installed back in June and it's now apparent that 50Meg is available for just £8/month more, which is worth it for the extra upstream.
I call VM and I'm told there's a £20 activation fee (ok) and a £30 installation charge (eh?) 'because special cable needs to be installed for 50meg'
The CSR didn't know what was special able the wires.
Will the wires pulled from the green box around three months ago not be special enough ? Seems awfully short sighted to install un-special wires on a fresh install !
It's not the wires it's the modem and router
50Mbit is tech install only

I do wish VM would be more flexible with giving services that people actually want.
I'm quite happy with 20 meg down and don't need 50 meg but I would really like 1.5 meg upstream.

I don't know what "wires" need to be replaced but my 50 meg install was pretty much as simple as swapping the old modem for a new modem.
The tech made a quick check of the signal levels, perhaps old installations need newer higher spec cables from the street?

I'm a bit (more) annoyed since discovering that 50meg ought to have been available to us from the off but I was 'reliably' told that 20 meg was the fastest available.
Mind, I was 'reliably' told, for 12 months, that cable wasn't available at my address despite next door (semi) being cabled.
That crap advice cost VM about £500 and banished me to 4 meg DSL for the duration.
I had to pay £50 for the install/connection to upgrade from 20mb to 50mb.
They replaced their modem and installed a new D-Link 'n' router (http://www.dlink.co.uk/cs/Satellite?c=Product_C&childpagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLProductCarousel&cid=1197319391320&p=1197318962342&packedargs=ParentPageID%3D1197318962321%26TopLevel PageProduct%3DConsumer%26locale%3D1195806691854%26 packedargs%3DProductParentID%253D1195808621247&pagename=DLinkEurope-GB%2FDLWrapper) which they say is mine for good. They also provide a D-Link USB apator (http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=0&pid=652) if you need it for b/g wireless computers.
So you get about £60-£70 of hardware to keep.

You get the equipment free and it is yours to keep as Virgin will not ask for it back and it saves you going out to purchase your own kit and you moan about the price Virgin may have bought the equipment for.

I don't have an issue I was just replying to the previous post, and you don't get it to keep, it remains the property of VM.
Ergo to say you get £60-£70's worth of equipment for free is wrong. You are supplied the equipment to use the service as long as you are a subscriber and the equipment costs VM less than stated in the previous post.

I know it remains Virgins property but they never ask for it back and that is why they are on Ebay for sale new in the box.
Every supplier of equipment gets a good deal from the manufacturer so the price they pay does not really come into it as the standard retail price is the measure you should use.

None at all but it is true that they never ask for the kit back and that a lot finds it way illegally on to Ebay.
Then sometimes a customer calls in with a wireless issue and the is no wireless on the account and they say but its your kit I bought it from ........... and we then say its not on the account so we cannot help as it is now 3rd party equipment.

When it was installed I had to sign an agreement for the wireless router on it's own to agree that it was their equipment.
