View Full Version : Problem with US sites?

Can not report in virgin support newsgroup as its also down.
Anybody else have problems with:
www.ABC.com
www.CBS.com
www.NTL.com
and more...
Trace to the sites please?

You are joking right
Just spent over 70 minutes on the phone to tech support (India) and apart from being kept on hold for the majority of the call I was told it was Internet Explorer (I use Firefox), then it was my 3rd party router at fault.
Not once did he care to look at or acknowledge that I was having ping timeouts on the virgin network. This info was given at the start of the call and numerous times throughout.
Phew..just been going mental and power cycling stuff. Would explain why stuffs been gettable then not then is etc.
Also has FB issues and stuff such as apples site and some AudioVisual sites slow which normally fly.
Had problems on laptop and iphone so assumed it was net related. Power cycled modem and router and seemed better but then came on here.
In M33.

Same problems, Been on the phone to them - something to do with DNS servers i'm told.
They are getting massive amounts of calls about this problem - and "are working on it"
and the problem "has been escalated" and should be solved in the next "few hours" or "try tomorrow"
On another note, having had quite enough of waiting, and after telling them i'm very annoyed 3 times i was disconnected. Speaking to a supervisor now to place a massive complaint.

It just means that a network carrier that Virgin use has gone down. Nothing todo with the us.

I'm getting issues with .net sites hosted in Australia too.
Though as i type this, the 2 tabs with Facebook and the other site have just loaded.
One of the network carries has gone down, this means that some site cannot be accessed because you cannot be routed to it. It's just a waiting game!
If you do a tracert to something like facebook.com then use the first IP it gives you, you can still access the site.

The DNS servers are working fine, it won't help to go via the IP address rather than the normal URL. It's just pot luck.

It might where a site resolves to multiple IP addresses. Routing to some may work, but not others.
Why is it I can get into some .com and not others?
Sir John, I think you may have answered this question, lol

facebook.com hasn't been accessible for 2 hours here but i've been using the IP just fine, no problems at all.

Thats true i suppose. Though using the 69.63.178.11 IP I get doesn't help any.
Its weird. Sometimes i can get on then sometimes its slow
Thank goodness for that. I have just updated iTunes to v9 and since then I have been having difficulty connecting to the iTunes servers.
Thought it was me. Hopefully not.
Ah this explains why Apple Software update can't connect to the server, phew I was messing with Firewall settings.
That and the fact the world and their dog is trying to update to itunes 9 / iphone 3.1
This cant be helping matters though.
several Sites are coming upText only no graphics or background colours . trying to
access my Yahoo group the picture is in wrong place Overlaped by the menu bar
colours are all wrong and links dont work. Nice this Yahoo lost loads of groups
in the week as well said they were closed .

I know I shouldn't find this funny...Even the Virginmedia Service Status page has problems loading. It's all the advert sites failing to load.
Why have adverts on this page?
u will tend to find that not all problems are listed on the status page.
Facebook use a Content Delivery Network (CDN), thats why it works for some and not others.
Could be why sometimes its okay and then sometimes its not depending when i check it?
Least theyve bothered to put it on the status page/phone line.

You can be given an IP address / A record, but that means nothing, it gets routed to different data centres depending on the traffic.

Apart from the usual line in bizarre routing from Virgin (do I really need to go Croydon -> Brentford -> Manchester -> London...) all seems ok here.
Actually never mind that I spoke too soon, routing is flapping. Both of the below to same destination, routing broke part way through first trace:

More annoying is being unable to reach websites, which is still ongoing.
Yet another virgin media outage, dealt with anything but promptly. Their systems clearly have totally inadequate fault tolerance for serious use, and on top of that they are appallingly slow to fix or work around problems when they do occur.
I believe they are happy to provide a low quality of service and get bad user ratings compared with other broadband providers simply because they have a lot of customers with bundles of TV/telephone who find it hard to switch.
You tell `em!
Vote with your feet.
Excellent advice! Otherwise Virgin Media seems almost entirely unconcerned about its poor quality of service.

I'm beginning to wonder, you could have rebuilt the network by now.
I spoke to VM last night and they said they had no idea what the problem was. Latest update was posted on the website at 13:54 saying ' This issue is still under investigation by our engineers'
Looks like they are still no closer to resolving it.
Well at least you lot have been able to come here and rant about it.I've not been able to get connected to any sites at all, US or UK or Timbuktu for about 5/6 hours.:(
The partial access is very strange. For example, I can access chess.com, but the service does not work, possibly because I can't access chesscomfiles.com which hosts their style sheets (don't ask me why they structure it like this). Yesterday I could access a forex market news site, today the DNS does not know it exists. Looks like the system is badly broken, and has no built in safeguards or redundancy to cope with it.

I could only get to certain sites via the webcache last night and thought there was something up, confirmed now I seen this thread.
I can now see evidence that the problem may be bigger than Virgin Media. One domain that is causing problems for me is chesscomfiles.com, which is where the style sheets for chess.com appear to be hosted. If I look this domain up at http://cqcounter.com/whois/ I can find its IP address, but if I do a domain lookup at http://ip-lookup.net, I get an error message saying the DNS does not know it. Virgin Media seems to be the same as ip-lookup.net in that a tracert for this domain says it is not know to the DNS. I am not fully versed in how the different services maintain their databases, but there are definitely discrepancies broader than Virgin Media at present. Also I have heard that some Virgin Media customers in other parts of the UK now have access to websites that I still can't get to because they are not in the DNS, which means that Virgin Media must be using different DNS for different parts of the country, with different incompatible data. Strange.
