Basically talking to a friend (whose Dad is a BT Engineer) about how generally turd the ISP's of this country are (came to a conclusion that they are robbing *coughs* and turd in general :D )

However she makes a point that Virgin Media's services go through equipment that at the end of the line is owned by BT (not modems etc, underground cabling, boxes etc - all the back-end gubbins).

Is this true?

For thier national internet service not on an LLU probably YES, but for cable and VM to VM phone calls then NO

I thought the same - is there any proof of this online at all? (Ammo ;))

VM's LLU will live in the BT exchange the cable network does not

She may mean international links to the USA etc (via Goonhilly?)

International links to the US would appear to be a mixture of NTT, Cable and Wireless, and Global Crossing, all of whom are (afaik) top-tier, so have their own networks. So no BT there either!

BT don't own the transatlantic fibre either.

Nope, she's adamant that the backend stuff is all BT owned...

Well Judging by the knowledgable answers given by the guys here, adamant or not, I'd say she's wrong :p:

...or she simply doesn't understand the difference between Virgin National (ADSL) and Virgin Cable.
