View Full Version : Router Killing my XXL Speed

I'm on the XXL Broadband package and use the Netgear Router provided on installation. My main PC, which is wired to the router (when connected), achieves a max of about 18mbps when connected to the router (on its own, for the sake of testing). When connected directly to the cable modem, I can see about 30mbps. This is tested by downloading files from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com.

Have I got a naff router?

What router do you have mate?

Also you have to factor in signal degradation. Things like phones, microwaves, walls, and neighbours wireless signals are contribute to what is known as a noisy environment. Try changing your channels on the router, also try drtcp as well.

Given OP is complaining about wired speeds I'm not sure that a 'noisy environment' will be an issue. Nor do I see much point in spamming that Bangalore style troubleshooting script given it's a specific, reproducible issue not a 'my internet is broken' post.

Please try and switch 'MCSE CCNA A+ honest guv' help desk robot mode off and read people's fault posts - issue relates to difference between direct to wired and wired.

Will - Try http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks and see if that fixes your direct to modem speeds. Sometimes also gamefiles just fails to achieve max throughput for no apparent reason (other than that it's not dedicated and just happens to be there ;) ) try something like http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

The router itself sucks moose wang yes, but you might get some better results if you disable the SPI firewall on it - go to WAN Setup and tick 'Disable SPI Firewall' box. I was throughput capped until I disabled this.

Can you also try this from a command prompt: ping -n 100 -l 1460 192.168.100.1 just to ensure there's no cabling problems or w/e between PC, router and modem?

You may gave a naff router. I do not believe that VM are giving out those Netgear routers any more, I think they have moved to D-Link.

@Broadbandings

What's the situation with dongle drivers? Just that I know the original drivers never quite got upto full speed? Could it be likely that this is the case here? Perhaps a link to the latest drivers?

The new driver is for an enhancement in speed and stability.

@Kymmy and xocemp

The OP said he is using a WIRED connection, so wireless dongle drivers wouldn't be the problem ;)

If you had a 7 year old screaming and cursing at a Nintendo DS in the same room while you were trying to work, on phone and Cisco WebEx troubleshooting a complex issue for one of the largest corporations in the world you might be somewhat irritable as well :D

Kids, gotta love 'em. :angel:

How correct...busy as hell here trying to cook dinner for the dogs ;) hence I missed the fact it was wired..

Does the router have a QOS setting that might be interfering with the speed? Also how exactly are they measuring the speed?

I'd love to install a driver. It's the 'don't save a couple of quid handing customers PoS kit that can't really do the job properly now, and that you'll need to replace for your next speed upgrade' driver.

Bleh, not Virgin Media Bean Counter Compatible driver, installation rejected :(

That router has a couple of QoS settings. One is that it doesn't have enough memory to handle many connections, another is that it doesn't have the CPU power to go above 20 - 30Mbit with its' SPI firewall enabled in some cases. ;)

Is that possibly the reason as to why they're going over to d-links?

I was about to do that upgrade on my daughter's PC, then I realised that I was about to update the wireless driver over VNC, which may well be wanting wireless connectivity to be in place.

:dozey:

That or they were 20p / box cheaper, who knows.

Certainly it's a waste of silicon for me, race between router and modem which one falls over first when I click 'start' on uTorrent. :D

Rather you than me. I know that feeling only too well and i only have to deal with a couple of web servers and a shoutcast server.

They only ever seem to start just as things start going pear shaped lol :p:

:blush: Errm yea I was cooking dinner for the........pifft who am I kidding, I didn't read it properly and jumped on the bandwagon :p:

It would be an interesting test though, what speed would the OP get using a wireless connection.

It would be an interesting test though, what speed would the OP get using a wireless connection.Pretty much the same as I get through wired.

It's that speed consistently, no matter what other people are doing (torrents, Xbox - or nothing more often) or whether I'm connected wirelessly or wired.

It's clear there is plenty of bandwidth left on our connection, just the router lacks the ability to get beyond 20mbps. Who do I ask for a new router?
