hi, first time posting to the fourms, used to read alot and helped me heaps ;)

i have only the broadband now (used to have tv, but due to whole sky one thing, you probably know) and when i had it upgraded from 2mb (was original NTL subs one from 512k etc...) i was getting my speeds 10mb no problem since last xmas. i seem to notice last 2 weeks that the speeds are not the same constant levels it used to be. my speeds range from 2-8mb and i used to get 9mb constant (according to speedtest.net, now its different every time.)
robinwalker even reports this
1st 128K took 181 ms = 724155 Bytes/sec = approx 6025 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 183 ms = 716240 Bytes/sec = approx 5959 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 222 ms = 590414 Bytes/sec = approx 4912 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 201 ms = 652100 Bytes/sec = approx 5425 kbits/sec

1st 128K took 239 ms = 548418 Bytes/sec = approx 4563 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 262 ms = 500275 Bytes/sec = approx 4162 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 302 ms = 434013 Bytes/sec = approx 3611 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 424 ms = 309132 Bytes/sec = approx 2572 kbits/sec

(when i used to do it in the past i used to get 9000+ and this is when i constantly refreshing it, but now its up and down (im the only one on net, and wifi is secured (turned off anyhow)) im doing this after the b/w cap

i know its not my router as i have gotten the same slowness when plugged directly to the pc. I know its not my cable modem (i did get the old modem replaced this monday now i have a virgin 256)
=====On New Modem :========
Downstream Receive Power Level : 3.3 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 39.9 dB
Upstream Frequency : 29200000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QAM16
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 50.0 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2
==========================

my connection just keeps fluctuating from 2-8 and sometimes it just stays at around 3mb :( this is rubbish as i should be getting better constant speeds like i used to and now its not like that for last 2-3 weeks.

its driving me mad as it also happens in the day as well (before b/w cap) any ideas what to say to the tech people as they keep saying that everything is working hence why they sent the new modem (they said it could be the NTL one) but its still doing the same thing :(

can someone point me in the right direction

Thanks in advance ;)

Ok, Power Levels / Signal Levels / Freq's

All spot on.

the results from speed test however are KAK. mainly because Speedtest and all other speed test websites are extremely inaccurate on a Virgin Media Connection.

I am like you, years ago speed test was accurate pretty much down to a T.

However the past year and a bit its totally hopeless.

Downloading from a reputable site like Microsoft or a nice and fast website like the http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com will show you your real speed.

if you want to do a proper ping test on Windows XP
1. open up start and go to run, type in cmd and click ok.
2. in the box type in ping bbc.co.uk or www.virginmedia.com then press enter, you will then see your true results in milliseconds.

If you want to do it on Vista
go to Start > Start Search and Type in cmd and press enter, then follow step 2. above

post your results here of the speeds you get and the pings you get.

depending on the outcome there could be a possible fault on the UBR but we need the true details first. Never rely on speedtest websites that are not actually ran by your ISP.

When i run speedtest.net years ago it used to be pretty accurate. Im on the 20mb con and have been for quite a while now and every time i do a test with that website it tells me im either on a 13mb con / 4mb con / 38mb con??????! its just too inaccurate for my liking now.

Hope this helps

On the gamefiles, all you get is an Apache holding page

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Test Page

This is the exact reason I got registered at this forum and luckily found this thread. I am new with Virgin media broadband (just two weeks) and having the same problem. I was hoping for 9 to 10 Mbs download speed but broadband speed keeps on fluctuating between 1.5Mb to 9Mb. Most of the time it is under 3Mbs, called customer service yesterday and got the answer that there is work going on in my area and speed will be fine within 2-3 days. I can not even play BBC iplayer HD smoothly, one more thing is about my iphone. It has a wireless connection problem with virgin broadband, in my previous house I had sky broadband and it was working fine. I'll appreciate if someone tell me what can be the problem. Anyway I'll call technical guys in few days and let you know if I can get high internet speed. Luckily right now download speed is 8.9Mbs..........

That could possibly be a Signal To Noise issue on the line. The agent may be right about the work going on.

Give it a few days then Ring 150 (option 3 then 3 again)

you say that www.speedtest.net is inaccurate, but that has always, and i mean always never shown nothing less then 9mb before and i am getting mixed results.
but broadband speed keeps on fluctuating between 1.5Mb to 9Mb. Most of the time it is under 3Mbs
im lucky if i get 9 now (used to get it all last year) this is something that has happened in last 3 weeks, as i have always gotten great speeds.

i even did a test on a 100MB FTP link and i was not getting the usual 1mb/s (i know there is a diff between bit/bytes and thats my max) but this kept bombing up and down as well 300k-500k and down to 200k. which is unusual for me.

I've only seen ping times like that during a massive outage or when the customer is uploading.
When you're on the phone to tech support and you tell them this when it's happening, providing there's no network fault they should be speaking to 2nd line.

If you click Connection at the top of the page it will tell you what ubr you're on but please don't post your full IP address.

Speed Test / any speed testers are inaccurate, they are off network, results depends on location, server load, transit etc etc.

The packet, loss *can* be caused by routing issues - speak to TS asap.

Out of interest, how are you connected to your VM kit?

lol im not gonna post my ip address but here is the UBR

Host cpc10-ipsw1-0-0-custXXXXX.cable.virginmedia.com

i am using a router but this is not at fault as i get similar results when i am directly connecting to the net using the CM, i have made sure to rule the router out (its a buffalo one with 4 port switch router is now just over 2 years old) also cabling as well used different sets of cat5 as well, but results are similar.
