50MB Users and their speed test results.

Hi All

I have a quick question for any 50MB users who have time to reply.

When using Broadband speed check websites, what do you get? and can you reccommend a reliable one which CS will consider a reliable source for measuring my speed.

The reason I ask is, I have recently had 50MB installed and TBH I'm quite happy with the speed BUT the two speed tests i have done

www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk

both report back speeds between 15-20mb.

The speeds I get are 1mbps on very popular torrents and 500-700 from most websites (such as sourceforge and afterdawn). At first I was happy with this because I've come from BT 8MB and never saw torrents go above 200Kbps, however I suspect im getting speeds you would expect from a 20mb line but paying for 50mb in which case my connection should be even faster than it is.

try this site to speed test, and you can also download 1GB or 500mb etc etc test files, i use it and i get a good 45-50mb down speed from it.

Thanks for the replies so far guys, it does look like it is slower than it should be.

Bigtoe, I'm wired straight into the router and have tried it straight into the modem also with the same results.

If you're consistently getting below 40Mb I would contact support tbh. I think a 20% deviation is more than fair considering the network is supposed to be new and have loads of capacity..

Have you tried downloading from of the links below ? They give a pretty accurate indication of your speed, the speedtesters can vary I've had a few strange ones myslef on 50MB especially Speedtest.net

There are also a few speed tests hosted within VMs own network but the sites are password protected. The tech probably ran a test from one of these sites when your install was done.

now getting download speeds of 47.1 Mbs/ 5.9Kbps :)

but it is a bit up and down but think they still have probs in my area :0

It's looking like it is slower than it should be then, I will try the virgin test when I get home from work tonight and if that reports back less than 40 then il give support a ring.

Thanks again for all the replies, its made me see it should be even faster, I probably would have just put up with it otherwise as like I said before I thought it was fast already being used to BT 8mb, but if im paying for 50mb then its only fair I get 50mb.

I did speednet and getting different results as per usual.

Manchester - 38.7
Birmingham - 33.3
Coventry - 1) 40.6
2) 33.3
3) 30.1
4) 24.2

As you see with the conventry one I did 1 test after another and the speed got worse lol

Virginmedia game website I was getting on average 4.8 to 5.2 megs a second download which is pretty close to the 50mb connection

speed io - test 1 - 47.1 and speed test 2 - 47.0

broadband speed checker - 1) 47.9
2) 46.3
3) 31.1
4) 38.2


As you can see the speed changes all the time try doing a speed test after 6pm and it sometimes says my speed is anything from 15meg to around 28meg

news groups dont usually give out my full speed either anything from around 1.8meg to 4.5meg but it usually settles with around 1.8 - 3meg

Try a few more tests if you can throughout the day/late evening and see what happens if your not happy then give VM a call
