My 50mb service is epically slow compared to the speeds I'm supposed to get, I've seen videos on youtube people speedtesting their stuff and they get 50mbs or close to that.

The highest I've ever gotten is 28mbs, this is an epic fail and I'm very disappointed.

Any advice before I call VM??

Thanks guys, :D

Good day.

Try speedtest.bbmax.co.uk

Those servers you have tested on have never given me a good speed but the london one has allways been very accurate..

Also download this and post speed result:

http://mirror.sov.uk.goscomb.net/ubuntu-releases/jaunty/ubuntu-9.04-desktop-i386.iso

I get full 6.0mb/s

If you are having speed issues on 50Mb then call the number below.

50Mb support line number.

0800 052 0431

Do not call if not 50Mb as you will be asked to hang up as the is no facility to transfer you to Broadband Support.

Router or no router?
Are you using your own router or that supplied by Virgin? If you are using your own then its port or its cpu may not be high/powerful enough for 50Mbps. Use the virgin supplied router and try again.

Wired or Wireless?
Wireless won't give you 50Mbps, especially on 802.11g. Wireless 'n' might give you around 46Mbps but generally no more, and often less. Wired will give you the full speed regardless providing you have at least 100Mbps or above.

Auto-negotiate or full duplex forced?
Check your ethernet connection if using one, to check its not on auto-negotiate. Force it to 100Mbps Full Duplex or 1Gbps Full Duplex and retry your tests.

Try alternative speedtest sites as well. Speedtest.net isn't always accurate for 50Mbps.

The ONLY way to test 50mb is wired, I just had it installed and the engineer did start to panic when 2 laptops connected wireless would not do more than 28 to 30mb, i just plugged the laptops into the router with Ethernet and all was good...

You should see a stronger more consistent connection over wireless and the upload should be bang on the money...but i doubt you would see full speed.
