View Full Version : Connection constantly throttled?

I have a problem. For the past month atleast my 10MB connection refuses to go faster than 300kbs (what it usually reduces to when throttling comes into effect).

Admittedly im a heavy down loader off things such as Usenet and im well aware of the throttling polices so I only usually download after 9pm which my downloads will go a steady 1200kbs.

It seems like the connection is throttled all the time for some reason, downloads are slow, Xbox Live menus are very slow and I can't host games reliably any more, YouTube is a chore to watch, having to let the videos buffer for about a minute before so its obvious something is wrong. I've tried power cycling both modem and router various times (Ambit cable modem and Netgear WNR200 router), factory restoring the router but no joy!

Any ideas what could be causing this? Worth a call to CS?

Many thanks!

Can you provide these for me please:

Start >> Run >> CMD

ping www.bbc.co.uk

Paste results

tracert www.bbc.co.uk

How are you connected?

Wifi >> Router >> Modem?
Or something else?

Could you also try, connecting your PC / Laptop via ethernet direct into the VM Modem and doing the above.

Do you have a router attached?, have you got wireless enabled?, is it secure?

My PC and Xbox 360 is a wired connection downstairs to the router, then to the modem. Although we have a wireless laptop and another Xbox which is wireless which go slow also. The wireless is secure. I've tried the steps on the virgin site to no avail!

i had the same problem for a 1year and was to lazy to do anything about it.
after when i got myself back together and knew i wanted to go faster, i reformatted all my hard disk installed everyhting again and it works much much faster now.
it was probally a virus dat the pc guard didnt catch!
so if all fails try reformatting and install everyhting as new.

it worked for me

Thanks for the advice but I doubt that is the problem as everything is slow in the house not just the one PC.

Do a speedtest www.speedtest.net or http://speedtest.bbmax.co.uk and post the results. We're interested in the upload speed.

Also go to http://192.168.100.1 and login with the username and password 'root' (no quotes) and post the "downstream receive level", "upstream receive level" and "downstream SNR". Do not post your MAC or IP address.

Also tell us your modem model number (not just the brand). It may be out-dated and need replacing.

That will help us determine the problem a little more easily :)

Ok here are my speedtest results

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2009/08/52.png

That defiantly isn't good!

Downstream Receive Power Level : -9.9 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 20.3 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 52.50 dBmV

Im guessing they are the right things you asked for.

Some ntlhome:200 are not compatible with 10mbps. They need to have firware 003 or later although i am not sure how you would find the firmware revision

Are you BB M 10mb or BB L 10mb?

Basically have you ever had a reliable 10Mb connection?

Downstream signal strenth and quality is very low. You need a tech.

oops missed that bit. ntl 200 definately won't like that signal strength ambit 256 is fine with it though just

I believe im on BB L 10mb. We've had reliable connection for id say over half a year if not more. Looks like a call to the tech people it is then!

Downstream Receive Power Level : -9.9 dBmV Too Low
Downstream SNR : 20.3 dB Too Low
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 52.50 dBmV OK

You need a technician out to adjust the power levels. It is free of charge to get this done as it is a fault.

-9.9 dBmv is a borderline level it works just fine with my connection. Main concern is SNR
