I'm new here so I dont know if this has been mentioned before.
I have been with Virgin for about 5 years and have just been upgraded to 10Mb broadband. Over the last few weeks this has been getting slower and slower so that I was only getting old dial up speeds 256 -500kb. If I turned the modem off and on it would start giving me 5Mb but then would slowly drop off ending up slow again within 10 minutes.

I rang Virgin this week, only to be on the phone for 2 hours going through checks on the computer and modem (this was re-booted by them with new software?), even trying another computer. Eventually it was agreed that the modem was the problem.

The man arrived 3 days later to take one look at the old NTL modem and laugh, he went to his van and came back with a new modem. This worked straight away. The old modem apparantley does not support the latest upgrade neede for 50Mb broadband, and I was lucky that it was still working.

If this is known why was I on the phone for 2 hours? Why have new modems not been sent out?

So if you get a problem with your broadband and you have an old NTL modem start this may be the answer.

Hi Styeveta, Prior to Virgin takeover I was on Telewest and the Modem is a Motoroler 585100. I find the Startup process very slow, it takes an age to load the P C Guard and also a long wait for the Internet Express to connect. Could this be rectified by a change of Modem do you think.

I dont know to be honest but your modem must be old so it could well be worth a try. Should you be getting 10mb now?

Your PC is at fault, not the connection, and the SB5100 is just fine.

Getting rid of PC Guard and replacing it with something that works might be of value.

Hi Broadbandings and thanks for your comments.I'm told that perhaps the Computer needs a clean-up of the Registry,( I'm afraid that I am lost there), I recall asking PC World to service the Computer about a year ago but that made no difference, it was still much slower than when purchased.

Try CC Cleaner link below it is a simple tool and can be set to run at start up and may help.

my current speed also on a brand new modem:

Also a 2MB to 10MB upgrade customer.
I've noticed this problem ever since being upgraded a month or so or go, but it was very intermittent. Seems to have got much worse over the last week and this is the max speed I can achieve most of the time at the moment. It's always either around the 1Mb/s mark or the full 10Mb/s mark, never in-between.
