50mb install tomorrow - question?

kinda excited at the prospect of getting up to 50mb after tomorrow's install and wondered if any extra work is done with the site engineer regards new cabling/wiring etc and do you get a new router?

Please ensure the engineer wipes his feet before entering the house he got mud stains all up my carpet! lol, but basically he brings the new modem and the new router.. Checks your line signal, plugs the new modem in, rings his little friends up at virginmedia to activate the modem, restarts it a couple of times then gets you to do a speedtest.. then DONE =)

Be prepared to be on the phone to vm regarding your download speeds and upload speeds.

I got told that i was 3rd in Northampton to have 50mb and the person he install previous only got 32mb because his green cab was one of the oldest.. i personally have never had a drop in speed i guess im lucky.

Fingers crossed - so if you pay for 50mb and get 32mb - what's VM take on that ?

The engineer will do a speedtest.. if he see's your not getting what you should be he will report a fault.

Be aware when they set up your router that the optimum setting for wireless may not connect with some legacy wireless devices. I insisted that the engineer leave the setting at WPA2-PSK [AES] rather than WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES. This will connect to your new 300 mb Netgear wireless adaptor, if you should need it, and any older adaptors. You can always change this by running router wireless setup afterwards.

Do connect your PC by ethernet cable directly to the Netgear router, to get maximum speed. Most people will not get anything like 50mb by wireless connection.

If so then I need to u/g to a gigabit switch, too.


Poo, poo, read specs on that router and only supports upto 100mbit ethernet.

I believe the D-Link router they will be using from August onwards has Gigabit Ethernet.

All pcs are connected with ethernet (i hate wi-fi) so I have no need for wireless n connection.

Nope take it or leave it. i already had the Netgear router but i still took the one VM gave me. sell it fleabay if you want.
