what is the truth about the 10Meg upgrade is it as bad as some say?

Hi again,

I have read some pretty nasty reviews about the 2 Meg to up to 10Meg upgrade and my son keeps telling me as long as the web exists there will always be people who like to complain about nothing.

what are the views of actual 2 Meg upgraders to up to 10Meg broardband please?

is it really as bad as people say?

Depending on area people who live in overloaded area do see a crappy speed but if you live in a ok area then you should be fine.

2mb to 10mb free upgrade has been great for me - now can have all three machines on the net at the same time without a problem. Normal downloads run at around 1mb, so no problems at all.

I had my upgrade in Doncaster about 3/4 weeks ago and there has been no detrimental impact on my service at all.

I'm in N E Lincs, my 2mb was upgraded to 10 a few weeks ago and ran fine. A few days ago it slowed to dial up speeds, now it's running ok but the speed is back down to 2mb. Maybe just teething problems but it's pretty disappointing.

I didnt upgrade by going online I switched to (L) broardband pack. when the upgrade from 2Meg came I refused to up grade at the time not realising that they would decrease my service from package (M) to package (S) which is throttled more than (M).

so I upgraded to (L) this morning the XL phone package ie talk unlimited and broardband with the old (S) broardband package was costing me 18.00 a month with a 8.00 rebate for taking the two services together, the upgrade to broardband package (L) with talk unlimited (XL) amounts to an extra 4 quid a month for the (L) broardband pack but the rebate for taking talk unlimited with (L) broardband is £11 so the actual extra cost of having (L) broardband per month is £1.00 worth doing the change I think, so if you havent upgraded from 2meg yet it might be worth giving customer services a ring if you have the talk unlimited (XL) phone package. the changes took place in less than 30mins all I had to do was switch off my modem leave it five mins and switch it back on again and presto faster broardband. no renewed contract for 12 months just rolling from month to month perfect.

just before the DOCSIS 3.0 switchover in swansea for about 6 days my modem was rebooting around the same time EVERY morning, around 1:15am so it could be them working on it.

After going from 2Mb STB to 10Mb SACM, it doesn't FEEL faster, speed tests are pretty good, but time to load a page seems to be worse if anything, gut reaction is that the latency may have increased, possible by being pretty late on the 2Mb, it was flying due to light load, while the 10Mb SACM setup may be more congested.

Ok, my levels are borderline low, but not throwing any adverse logs, and flat out speed tests are good, it just lacks "snap".

Maybe I need to retune, but increasing the speed to 10 should not make things any worse for un-optimized or 1 or 2Mb optimized - can't remember if I last chose the RWIN according to 1Mb or 2Mb

I have to agree with Matth - since the upgrade file downloads are remarkably quicker, but page loads seem a little hesitant.

Despite several issues with VM, which lead me to cancel all services but BB, I am extremely chuffed with my BB service in Watford. Speed is constantly around 9mb and sometimes close to 10mb. Ping average 21.
I had no problem on there 2mb service either.
As mentioned by others, I had pages loading extremely slow at times but that could be because my PC needs a cleanup and it's running an early release of W7. I tend to overlook it though as am really happy with the speed increase.
Saying that, a family member has just subscribed to BT BB. I did a speed test yesterday and he was getting around 0.39mb and 61 ping!!!

I was on the standard broadband/through my set top box thingy blar blar blar.
Been on it for 4 years, no probs whatsoever.
My little old laptop always run as sweet as a nut. I just plug in my ethernet cable and away we go.
Last week the man came and put in my new modem for my alleged "upgrade".
Separate power supply needed, unlike my set top box (not very green) which is costing me money to do nothing when it's not in use.
I plugs in my laptop, gets it all up and running, yippee I thinks, super fast broadband.
Whats this? a delay? why is it slower?, my page load timer in Firefox says so, 5, 10, 15,20, 25 seconds to load a page, not every time admittedly, sometimes everything comes to a grinding halt then eventually does what it's supposed to.
Before the "upgrade", blisteringly fast, after the "upgrade", chug, chug chug, it feels like it's running through soup. It's not the laptop cos I've added nothing and removed nothing, I keep it clean and tidy ie cr*p removal and defrag as I've always done.
Impressed or what? nope, and on top of that I'm paying 2 quid extra.
I'm now paying £37 for a basic tv/phone/broadband package,
wish I was a new customer, I'd get it for 26.
I'm writing this via my vodafone mobile dongle which in all honesty is just a tad slower.
Time to look elsewhere methinks.

if you have the xl phone package as well as 2meg broardband as one package it will only cost you £1 a month to upgrade to package(L) broardband 10Meg, which is a lot faster than 2Meg and you get a rebate for having both of £11 a month this is why is works out so cheap to upgrade.

It is package M that is being upgraded from 2 to 10Mb. Package L with its better STM has been 10Mb since its upgrade from 4Mb last year.

The guys who can give you the best advise will probable need to know which modem you have....If you are not sure then have a look for a sticker on the bottom of modem.

Have you only recently moved up to L BB? if not then it may be something else effecting your speeds and if you browse to http://192.168.100.1/ (username is root and password is root if you have to LOGIN.)

Copy the details shown on the pages shown as UPSTREAM and DOWNSTREAM and post them here so that one of our more knowledgeable members can have a look at them

I probably don't have to tell you but do not post your IP or MAC details.

I should say that it's a tad above what you would expect to get on a 10Mb service though I understand that any such speed test can only be used a a rough guide to what levels you are getting.

A truer measure is to go to this link:-

Click on blueyondergames>demos, then choose at least 2 large files and run them for a couple of minutes before noting the transfer rates on the files that are running. Multiply the rates you have noted by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

250kbps X 8 = 2MB, 500kbps X 8 = 4MB, 1250kbps X 8 = 10MB, 2500kbps X 8 = 20MB

Don't forget to stop and delete the files. :D

Is it possible that the results you are getting are because your browser is reading from its cache and giving you erroneous readings? I remember once achieving over 25 Mb on my 4Mb service because of this. The results just keep getting higher and higher until I cleared the cache. :D

Right I#'m doing this but I can only download 2 files at time, anything more just hangs until I cancel one of the first 2.One says 620 KBS the other 590 kbs. I cant seem understand if I am supposed to be multiplying this by 8 or dividing by 8. Can someone put me out of my misery and work out my speed for me? Thanks.

Hi joglynne. That what I thought too. Anyway I ran some other speed tests from the links on top of the page and download speed was always between 7 and 8 mb and upload 0.50mb.

I think that's above average so I'm pretty happy. (As I think I should be).

Hmm 11.46Mpbs download speed on a 10meg connection, there must be something wrong with my sums and I triple checked it to.
