Got it installed on monday although not had speeds I can brag about over 20 mb really?

I have about 30 metres of ethernet cable running from upstairs to a pc downstairs and this was originally plugged into a belkin G+ router on 20mb connection and on speed tests I would get anything from 12-18meg

Downloading from newsgroups usually get me anything from 1600k/s - 2000k/s

so pretty much got my max there. getting 50mb installed I wasn't around and partner was here I was working the engineer told her on some speeds tests he did which I found on the pc logs (speed.io) we were getting pretty close to the full 50mb.

This was the pc upstairs that has the shortest ethernet cable to the router they supplied (netgear) however when I tested it on that pc I was getting somewhere near the 26meg mark.

So I tried the same test on the pc downstairs and I was getting the same mark roughly jumping from 18-35 meg

I thought with it being the cable downstairs e.g 30 meters that there is some loss in speed so as the engineer said to partner the dongle they supply would ensure I got the full 50meg.

He was wrong I just installed it now and speed.io says 30meg I tried to download from the newsgroups and I get around 2600k/s which is just slightly over the 20 meg speeds I was getting.

Is this right for 50meg I know its upto that speed but I thought it would have been faster than 2600k/s more like around 5000k/s

Is there anything else I need to do with the router/dongle as signal strength is full

If both PCs are wired, leave them that way, Wired is faster than Wireless, if you're not getting full speed something somewhere is wrong, what router are you using and have you tried it without?

its the wnr2000 that VM supply with router and dongle

I'm not sure what speed results I should be expecting with 50mb unless its the sites that wont give out 50mb

Try downloading a file from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com - note that many websites won't have more than a 100MBit connection

Or http://ubuntu.virginmedia.com :) either way works

Thanks I'm seeing speeds of 4mb+

Strange I would have thought newsgroups would have give out max speeds

All depends on what the source server(s) can push out, if it's busy it's entirely possible that they're overbooked, even if they're on a Gigabit link, 50MBPS will only go in so many times
