Right, a couple of days ago, my internet was working fine with download speed of 18mbps. But recently my internet has been really slow. I firstly thought It was my computers processor. But when I went on my laptop and ipod touch, I found it was actually internet.

Now I get download speeds of just

I really do not have a clue what is up with it, is it me or is it Virgin?

Mine's ok here on XL:

Maidenhead is a bit ropey though but that could just be that the server's taking a beating:

Could it be that your area's suffering from oversubscription? Have you tried speed.io or any other speedtest sites? Also worth trying a 2 or 3 large simultaneous downloads from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/ and seeing what the actual throughput is as speedtests are quite unrealiable. Also that server is direct on VM's network and will eliminate anything outside of VM's network being the issue.

PaulH has done something of importance. When I test on Maidenhead (just down the road-ish), I get sh*t results; when I test on London I get a proper result that compares with other trusted speed testers.

Also NickNeed has probably hit on your problem or there's an areas problem (like an intermittent MUX in the street box).

first of all I apoligise to all on this thread for what Im sure is a very very basic question, BUT how do i test my speed. How do i go about using the
speedtest .net icon I see in a few of the messages above ? I like many others are hoping to be upgraded from 2mb to 10mb, as mentioned by virgin media. I am in Belfast and read that the upgrade is happening this month, and perhaps has already happened in my area. I did a reboot of my modem last night, but to be honest I dont see any difference in the speed. I would love to do a test using the above mention icon / site, but am unsure of how, and then having did that, how to add my speed rating to the site.

Once again my apoligies for asking what must be a very basic question

harry

if you go to http://www.speedtest.net

the little yellow star should be the recommended server. click either the london or maidenhead sever. once clicked it should test the download and upload speed and produce a result.click on copy forum link and paste this link into one of your posts.
