View Full Version : Edinburgh - Slow Speeds
I know there was an outage last night for the Edinburgh & Glenrothes areas, but today the speeds are bad, anyone else experience this.

Now, I have cleaned the cache & cookies for both I.E and Firefox, I then re-booted the modem, and now my speeds without proxy on I.E are as below, so a good idea would be to do this whenever there has been an outage and you are suffering slow speeds, anyone agree? worked for me anyway.

Should not make any difference to the speeds unless it affected the speedtest site ability to work.

Well don't forget it's 98 that I use, and the speeds went back to normal after I had done all this, so if it changed after that then it must have had something to do with it surely.
My belief is that it was more than likely the modem re-boot that fixed the speed rather than the cache clean up due to the fact that I left my modem ready light flickering when I went to bed and to find it back steady again and I was back on-line after an outage.
I tested the speeds on 2 different sites, so we can rule out a problem site only.

That is usually what does the trick

I thought you may have said that earlier when I mentioned that I had re-booted the modem.
Thanks anyhow.
:)
It's highly doubtful rebooting the modem had any effect on your results since the modem had already rebooted once the cmtses and cards came online # no shut.

Ok, then how can you explain that after I had re-booted the results and browsing speeds were back to normal, surely not a coincidence!
And if what you say is correct then why is it that we are always told to re-boot the modem when there are problems such as these.

You'd be surprised at the amount of people who never reboot their modem.
My record is a customer with a modem uptime of over 400 days, they hadn't turned the modem off in over a year!!
Even though when you call through there's a message telling you to do just that.

Hi moaningmags,
As I say it worked for me, but the funny thing is, I had tried by switching the power off at the wall for 2 minutes then back on again and the problem was still there being slow, so I then used the modem config tools the one where you enter root as the password, and I re-booted using the tool on there, and after doing this the speeds were back to normal, and yet I had been told previously that the best way to do it was from either the connection to the modem or the actual power, either of the two, but personally I find using that tool works best.
Now, wait for someone to come on to say something negative about that, lol

Is it possible you were traffic managed and the coincidence is it ended when you rebooted?

If it works for you then continue to do so.;)

Possible, but highly unlikely.

Is it possible that someone could give me the links for the VM or Blueyonder games downloads, you know the ones that are given to test speed downloads and stuff. I can never find them, lol

Need to buy you a meal :D
Which of these files are the ones that are usually given by VM to check for speed, there are 2 but can't remember which ones.

Never use the same two, always use 2 different ones, rules out the possibility of your browser caching the result.
The link I gave you opens the page with all the large files at the top.
