Yes i was a 10 meg pirate, then a 20 meg one :D and i could get a film in 10 minutes or less, But i also got drop outs, corrupt files etc. I have just down sized as in the title to 2 meg [shock and gasps of horror from the stands] my connection is now stable my web pages seem to take the same amount of time to load up. Have stopped getting films, due to the fact that they are making crap ones at the moment [ cant remember the last time i saw a good one] by my standards.
I have Hdd's full of all the music i could ever want, dont do thumpy thumpy and current pop is pap.

Forwards and faster isnt always better ;)

It took a while to get to the point but i think i got there in the end [now theres a clue]

People complain when they go faster and get bigger and get a crap service - insert my last line here !!!

So what you are saying is...

The "slower" packages seems to be more reliable etc?

There is some truth behind that but I cant be bothered to type it all :)

Your connection was broken on the new network, works ok on the old. Solution really is to get VM to fix the 20M connection. You're an exception rather than the rule, there's no real de facto reliability difference.

Saying that I do wonder given how crap my own home connection has been since I moved it to 50...

I've just had the 2-10meg upgrade, and the 10meg is just as stable as my 2meg was! And I can now get decent pings in online games :D I think perhaps it was partially your equipment causing the drop-outs as opposed to VM :)

...and how do you that when they say:

a) you're over-subscribed - there's nothing we can do - wait for 50MB, then
b) 50MB is available - but my connection is still rubbish. So, "wait for us to move you to the new equipment". Any timescales for that? No!

So paying for 20MB - getting between 1-10 on a good day. I can understand why the poster is moving back to a lower tier.

I understood that the OP's issue related to general service stability, not to speed variation. I upgraded to 50Mbit from 20Mbit to resolve inconsistent 20Mbit speeds. Once 50 is available migration of 20Mbit to that network shouldn't be too far away.

How far away? days, weeks, months? They haven't even a schedule for it yet.

...and stability and speed mean the same - you can't transfer at the advertised speed.

Also, it doesn't make much sense having to pay more because you're getting less - maybe you should get VM to fix your 20M ;)

"Hello Mr Shopkeeper"
"Hello little boy"

"How much are your Sherbet Lemons please Mr Shopkeeper?"
"They are £20 for 20"

"OK Mr Shopkeeper - Here's my £20"
"There you go son"

"But Mr Shopkeeper, you've only given me 2 Sherbet Lemons"
"Ah. That's because the shop is full and everyone wants Sherbet Lemons. I haven't enough to go around so you'll all have to share. I'll make sure I get plenty in - sometime in the future."

"But that's not fair..."
"OK sonny, I'll tell you what I'll do. If you come back at 4:00am I'll give you the full 20 Sherbet Lemons for your £20"

"I'm in bed asleep at 4:00am"
"Well that's not my problem matey."

"This is a rip-off. Right! I just want 2 Sherbet Lemons then - here's £2"
"Sorry son, you're already paid me £20 - you'll have to pay me £20 for 20 Sherbet Lemons for the next 12 months now"

"Help! Police! I'm being Robbed!"
"He He He - There's nothing you can do sonny. I'm the only Shopkeeper in the area who says he can sell Sherbet Lemons in bags of 20"

LoL, can you still get Sherbet Lemons these days.

Reads like a Hovis advert 'when I were a boy etc, etc.:D

On a serious point since I've gone from 2M to FFFFast 10M I have run out of stuff to download.

What do 50M users do with all this power at their disposal.

There is no schedule for any area for migration of 20Mbit modems to the overlay network.

Stability / uptime and consistency of speed are somewhat different things. One causes the porn to come down the line slower, the other you've no broadband.

Also, it doesn't make much sense having to pay more because you're getting less - maybe you should get VM to fix your 20M ;)

Given that I don't pay for my 50Mbit and didn't pay for my 20Mbit it was a non-issue. In addition I didn't regard my 20Mbit as broken just because it wasn't 20Mbit 24x7, I only commented when it went to sub-8Mbit as a general rule and that was due to faults. OP's service was broken, not congested so I'm not sure why you're talking about it like it was.

i could get a film in 10 minutes or less, But i also got drop outs, corrupt files etc.

If you're expecting 100% performance all the time you're in for serious disappointment as speeds go up regardless of the technology, especially given how little this country tends to want to pay for its' broadband services, we've some of the cheapest and crappiest in the world which doesn't pay for that much dedicated bandwidth per customer.

I get the feeling you're a man who has some congestion on their service given your preoccupation with it?

Same as I did on 20 just a bit quicker, best bit is the slightly higher upload. Nothing particularly special to me about 50Mbit downstream at all.

the connection was fine when originally on 2meg and not really a problem on 4meg, problems arrived on the free upgrade to 10 and then on to 20. as stated previously it would drop out and actually connecting to websites was like a wet weekend in [take your pick]. was not down to browser as i tried a couple for comparison.
Had a dirty feed to the telly which was only noticable when i purchased a new lcd tv, snowy pics and an audible hum on all stations via STB which was fixed and is now clear as a bell. the up/down stream lights on the modem [silver ntl200] used to constantly chatter away even if i was not using the pc.

like i said previous there is now very little that i need to download these days and as such a slower connection now suits my needs and its cheaper plus the lights are off :D

Given that I don't pay for my 50Mbit and didn't pay for my 20Mbit it was a non-issue. Nice one - unfortunately some of us do.
There is no schedule for any area for migration of 20Mbit modems to the overlay network.OK - so how do I get my broadband fixed to give me anything like the speeds advertised? Or do I just keep paying a premium indefinitely to enable VM to upgrade 2M users to 10M and to fund a 50M network? If there is no schedule then why am I being told everything will be fine when I'm moved to the new equipment - when it's never going to happen because....it's not scheduled? Doh! What can I do?
I only commented when it went to sub-8MbitWell I commented when it got to sub-3M.

I feel I'm being ripped off and nothing is being done to fix my issue.

(I'm not having a go at you BB, or the other techies, as I know you provide alot of help in these forums)

LoL, can you still get Sherbet Lemons these days.I hope so. I haven't had any for years but had loads when a kid. Choked on a few also...
