Hello

An engineer came today to upgrade my broadband from 20Mb to 50Mb.
At best I can get 15Mb when downloading and 1.5Mb uploading (according to various speed test). Also tried downloading a game demo from the virgin server and still got the same speed.

Can someone please clarify what are the correct donwstream and upsteram levels for this connection?

I have also pasted below the information I get from the modem. Can you tell me if they look OK? But also please tell me what the correct range should be so, if an engineer comes out I know what I should be checking before he leaves telling me all is fixed.

Thanks Moldova

I have seen a sticky somewhere and I believe that the correct levels are the following. Can you please confirm if I am correct or I checked the wrong thread?

Downstream between -6 and +15 bBmV

SRN 33dB

Upstream bewlo +55 dBmV

Yes thats why you are best calling up Tech Support on the number above.

Just talked to them. They confirmed that the upstream levels are too high but said nothing about the downstream levels, and the engineer is coming in a week time!!!!!
I can't believe that the one who came to install the modem today did not check the levels. What a non-sense as this could saved them the cost of re-sending an engineer

Also, when the engineer will come I will mentioned the downstream levels as well (even though tech support did not comment on them).

Thanks again Modlova.

He will check them with a meter but its a good idea to mention it.

It would be better to say that someone in Faults told you it was too high rather than bloke of t'internet :-)

Nothing wrong with the service, the signal levels are off though

When did you become an expert on Virgin broadband and the power levels for the 50Mb tier.:D

The above Downstreams are spot on and the SNR is the same and Upstream ideally should be between 34 and 55

I thought on QAM 256 you want as close to 5dB as possible, as close to 0dB on QAM64.

With Upstream Transmit Power as low as possible.

OK guys.

I have had an engineer here today but, unfortunately, someone else has to come back next Friday again.
He has managed to tweak my upstream levels and downstream levels but he said I required an upgraded cable going from R6 to R11 as my cable is already on the top platter and can tweak it any more than what he has done.
Anyhow he has managed to move my downstream from average of -9.8 to -5.8
and the upstream from 58 to 54.25. The SRN is on 37.9.
I would have thought that those levels now are fine but according to him I still need the cable upgrade.

Also what you have to think if ur running windows xp or lower that an optimizer has to be downloade onto your pc which helps the speeds and a download is run to see what the speeds are if any lower than 30 then there is a problem but vm do say anything above 20mb is acceptable ? But secondly there could be things within the pc that may stop them running at the correct speed .

When I got my 50mbit installed today, initially the upload was 1.5mbit but the download was only 20mbit. I reset my computer and rebooted then did a test again and it downloaded fine at 50mbit. If you have not reset your computer since you got the 50mbit installed then reboot your PC.

What the problem is your downstream frequencies the 50mb qams should be as near to 0 as can be so the engineer should go down to the cabinet and move your cable onto a higher tap to compensate hopefully your upstream will then go down below 58
