I called VM yesterday to discuss my download speeds (I have read the capping terms now but didn't know them yesterday - neither did the cust support!)

I explained how after downloading around 3gig I then seemed to have only 2mb/s. He said "oh that seems strange" (say it in an Asian accent - it's OK I am asian)

He did some tests, found everything OK and said that an engineer will have to come out. I said, "do you think it is a cap?" he avoided an answer and said an engineer can be with me the next day. (obviously after I have read this web site http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html, but did he didnot know this? I know understand)

Anyhows, engineer turns up, I explain the overseas call centre, I was apologetic if he didn't need to come out, - He changed my modem! It ran full speed for about 30mins until the cap kicked in again!!

My whole argument is - is 3gig cap large enough for everyday use?

And for some strange reason - my Farther lives up the road from me, same street - I set up some downloads on his PC (he is on 2mb/s) and never was it capped - it downloaded for days at full speed!??

It would seem the only route is 50mb/s and get unlimited untill they shaft us on that also?

I would love to move to adsl, but nothing has been upgraded around here (they say I am out in the sticks, but I am in the middle of the sticks and town, the sticks get 20mb/s adsl!!) - I can only get 1-2mb/s on ADSL.

Its depending on the time of day also 2Mb isnt the speed that you should get if you have 20Mb and you have hit traffic management.

Sorry, i didn't specify, I am on 10mb/s and it caps you back 75% - so 2.5mb/s. So the 2mb/s I am calculating is about right.

Earlier today I called and am moving up to 50mb/s. They are giving free installation and also wavering Saturday installation charges, as I said I will take it if they can install it after 4pm (they can only offer between 1 and 6 during the week and now charge for weekend call out!). So then I said unless you can come when I am at home I will stay on 10mb/s. Just have to pay £20 activation charge.... I am dubious that I would actually get these intensives as in the past people have said things down the phone to me and I have been charged, so I asked him to write a note on my account.

But strangely he called me back after about 10mins, said he would credit my account now with £15 and the £30 and then I would be charged later - but overall free. If I hadn't made him insist on this would I have been shafted again and found these charges on my bill in a month?

You also need to specify which 10meg you're on, 10meg M and 10meg L have different thresholds during the day and night. Anyway both have their speeds cut by 75% after the threshold is reached.

It's L

But I'm off to 50mb/s now - as this seems the only way for unlimited broadband.

Very restrictive VM are in the way they make you pay more, and basically as it is a monopoly in my area, VM is the only way to go.

I reckon in a years time a Law will a passed making all broadband unlimited, this is not acceptable behaviour in restricting peoples usage of broadband and is effecting bussiness growth as people will get hammered if you go to a website that wants to feed you TV, video feeds, music, radio etc...

If you do some searching, in the USA they are trying to pass this Law to aid business growth on the web particularity internet TV etc..

America sir, not UK. And you need to read that article carefully, its not about the abolition of capping, its about the justification of why they need to do it.

Essentially, if the bill were passed, ISPs would be required to justify to the FTC not only why it must impose bandwidth caps, but also the pricing structure that’s behind each tier.
