Hi all, looking for some help.
Have 50 meg BB connecting wirelessly to a few pc's and laptops.
Now even when it is just connected to my laptop only, i have noticed the speed fluctuates wildly. When downloading from newsgroups it will start at zero climb to about 16 mb/s then drops back to very low speed, sometimes zero, then climbs again. It is like this constantly. It never holds a steady speed. Just constantly climbs then drops. Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this, more importantly, any ideas how to fix. All drivers are up to date. Have actually had modem swapped over as a result of a different problem but this problem still happening. someone gave a possible explanation in a previous post to do with downloading torrents, but this happens even when i try a download from virgin game files. Tried it before this post, DU meter showed speed climbing to 26 Mbps then drop to 8 then climb and drop regularly.

Thanks for any help.

Post what modem you have and your power levels from your config pages of your modem. The should be a sticker on the bottom saying what model.

If using an Ambit modem please click here
http://root:root@192.168.100.1/CmOpConfig.asp

If using any other modem click here
http://192.168.100.1/

What I want you to post is the Downstream power levels including the SNR and the Upstream power levels for me thanks.

DO NOT POST YOUR MAC ADDRESS OR SERIAL NUMBER

Hi there,
Should have said it is the 50 meg service i am on so have the wee modem that looks like a shrunken PS3.
my downstream power levels are
Frequency 299000000 307000000 315000000 N/A
Lock Status
(QAM Lock/FEC Sync/MPEG Lock) Y/Y/Y Y/Y/Y Y/Y/Y N/N/N
Channel Id 54 55 56 N/A
Modulation 256QAM 256QAM 256QAM N/A
Symbol Rate
(Msym/sec) 6.952 6.952 6.952 N/A
Interleave Depth I=12
J=17 I=12
J=17 I=12
J=17 N/A
Power Level
(dBmV) 5.88 5.16 5.04 N/A
RxMER
(dB) 37.09 37.09 37.36 N/A
Correctable
Codewords 254796 306716 354567 N/A
Uncorrectable
Codewords 278 254 271 N/A

Now as i mentioned previously the modem was swapped over recently due to another issue. When the engineer called he said that using his meter, some reading was sitting at Aero, yet there was a 5db attenuator between the modem and cable, he removed this. When he checked config page reading was showing as being about 6. I am assuming this was the downstream power level. He said that he preferred it to be sitting above zero so did not put the attenuator back in line. The variation in download speed was present with previous modem so the attenuator would not seem to be the cause. Upstream levels are
US-1 US-2 US-3 US-4
Channel Type 1.0 N/A N/A N/A
Channel ID 4 N/A N/A N/A
Frequency
(Hz) 25808000 N/A N/A N/A
Ranging Status Success N/A N/A N/A
Modulation 16QAM N/A N/A N/A
Symbol Rate
(KSym/sec) 2560 N/A N/A N/A
Mini-Slot Size 2 N/A N/A N/A
Power Level
(dBmV) 37.50 N/A N/A N/A
T1 Timeouts 0
T2 Timeouts 0 0 0 0
T3 Timeouts 0 0 0 0
T4 Timeouts 0 0 0 0

Hope you can decipher this.

Thanks for taking the time to try and help.

Downstream
Power Level
(dBmV) 5.88 5.16 5.04 Within normal range

RxMER on 50Mb this is the SNR
(dB) 37.09 37.09 37.36 Within normal range

Upstream
Power Level
(dBmV) 37.50 Within normal range
.
Your power levels are fine so any issues you are having are elsewhere, I would advise you to call the 50Mb support team on the number below.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
50Mb support line number.

0800 052 0431

Do not call if not 50Mb as you will be asked to hang up as the is no facility to transfer you to Broadband Support.
