Hi everyone

Im after some advice please. This morning a virgin media guy came and installed a cable modem for 10meg broadband.
I went through the setup restarting router on firefox.
Everything is working ok but its still the same speed. My torrents are downloading at 250kbs.

Does it take time for the new speed to kick in? Or do I need to phone somebody?

Cheers all

Speeds are higher than 2Mbps so you are on 10Mbps at least. Your area might be over subscribed. However, post your signal levels here so we can check they are OK.

Post your downstream power level, downstream SNR and upstream power level.

Do NOT post your MAC or IP address.

Downstream Lock : Locked

Downstream Receive Power Level : -6.8 dBmV Too low

Downstream SNR : 34.1 dB OK

Downstream Receive Power Level : -7.0 dBmV Same as above, post the upstream power level.

Ignore the logs, the config files are sent to all modems even if its the wrong one. The modem will error if its the wrong one but its not serious.

Post your upstream power level.

Upstream is fine.

You need a technician to sort out the downstream levels. Phone tech support and arrange a technician.

thank for all your help.I will phone them.

Before you phone them, if you are using Windows XP then try tcp optimizer http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php and set the slider to 10000 and click apply changes and then once you have applied them restart your computer. I couldn't acheive full speeds until I did this on my XP machine. If you are using Vista then this doesn't apply as vista changes these settings automatically so will not work.

Hope your problem gets sorted :)

Hi all again

I just phoned technical support and he said. "Your on 2meg not 10meg you need to sign up.

So I've gone to the virgin media page and sign up page.It will cost £7 a month more
£25 per month subscription

To go to virgin media broadband L
I got a letter through the post and It said 2 meg will be 10meg.

What should I do?

---------- Post added at 16:20 ---------- Previous post was at 16:16 ----------

When I sign up for free 2meg to 10 meg upgrade I get this message now.

Unfortunately the modem you have, which is part of your TV set top box, cannot handle superfast 10Mb. Just call us on 0845 454 1111* and select option 4 so we can arrange one of our engineers to visit and install a new modem for free.

You were upgraded from 2Mbps to 10Mbps FOR FREE. Do NOT let them upgrade you for extra cost. It is a free upgrade because 2Mbps no longer exists.

If you have a set top box then you need to sign up for a stand alone cable modem. That will be the second cause of your slow speeds.

They already have a separate modem because otherwise they wouldn't be able to get into the cable modem config. The website is giving the message in error.... Tech support need to look into it like you said.

@ the OP go on the config pages and go on the Operation config page and post what Maximum Downstream Data Rate says. If it says 10240000 then you're on 10 meg if not you aren't.

Ben here ive posted what you said

Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2148000

You're on 2mb, you need to ring 150 and explain whats happened again and make sure they understand and sort it for you.

That's 2Mb not 10Mb.

I wonder how many of the old 2mb customers are not getting the free 10mb upgrade? Its only the fact that the OP had the savvy to check his speed and not take VM at their word.
