Ok now onto Broadbandmax.co.uk

Last Result:
Download Speed: 24998 kbps (3124.8 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 1565 kbps (195.6 KB/sec ) Ping 65ms

Now below are 4 files i have dl'd from Virgins blueyonder site:

Right im running Windows Vista 64bit SP2, Netgear WNR2000 Wireless N Router, cable from my PC to the router is how i have it set up and the Netgear has the latest firmware on.

Speed has been up and down no matter how i dl files ie from Virgin sites, Nvidia, Microsoft and using Utorrent.

Ok now this has been going on for a month now starting with my 20meg connection where i was using the Netgear 54mbps router they dish out (which btw cost me 40squid from the robbing bar-stewards). Been in touch with their amazing India BB tech team and got nowhere, had 2 engineers out and all say my connection is fine with the latter engineer plugging his Virgin laptop into the back of my Router and getting a dl speed of around 43678kbps on that Broadbandmax.co.uk site.

I have done the following:

Changed my ethernet cable
changed my ethernet card
Checked my speed /duplex and that is set to Auto Negotiation
Gone into my Netgear router menu and then Wireless settings>wireless network and the mode is set to 300mbps
In 192.168etc:

downstream:

Power Level
(dBmV) 3.18 2.07 2.71 N/A
RxMER
(dB) 38.26 38.26 38.61 N/A

Upstream:

Power Level
(dBmV) 37.75 N/A N/A N/A

I have tried with a cable going from my PC to the modem and that only makes the speed slightly faster.

Ok any ideas, anything you guys need? before i phone Virgin and be put back down to the 20meg?

thx!

Checked my speed /duplex and that is set to Auto Negotiation > Switch to Full Duplex never have it set to Auto Negotiation.

downstream:
Power Level
(dBmV) 3.18 2.07 2.71 Spot on
RxMER
(dB) 38.26 38.26 38.61 Spot on

Upstream:
Power Level
(dBmV) 37.75 Spot on

!
Power levels are Spot on.

Change your card to Full Duplex as Auto Negotiation is not quick enough.

Sure i tried that and it slowed it down even more! i'll set it to Full, thx!

Well i have just dl'd a 1.20gig file in under 4mins! my head is battered from the differing results im getting with this connection lol!

Here is how the speedtest works below.

If you are a Virgin Media customer then the best speedtest is from the links below.

click on these 2 gamefiles battlefield_2142_demo.exe and bfme2demo_english_final.exe and save them to your desktop, and then wait a couple of minutes then write down the transfer rates on the files that are running add them together then multiply them by 8 and you will get a truer download speed.

Remember to stop and delete the files.

i.e : 250Kbps X 8 = 2Mbps, 500Kbps X 8 = 4Mbps, 1250Kbps X 8 = 10Mbps, 2500Kbps X 8 = 20Mbps

Then add 10% to the final figure to account for any processes running on your computer.

@monkey

I had this problem with XP and then went to Vista and i was on the 20meg and both operating systems i had slow speeds. I went to the 50 and again was getting fast and slow download speeds.

I run AVG and windows firewall, i have turned them off and it hasn't made any difference, i have also gone into safe mode and again that didn't make any difference!

So! i have just changed my duplex to Full 100mbps and got these results:

speedtest.net

London

DL 1.77Mb/s
UL 1.59Mb/s
Ping 60ms

Maidenhead

DL 2.32Mb/s
UL 1.40Mb/s
Ping 15ms

ok now onto Broadbandmax.co.uk

Download Speed: 2253 kbps (281.6 KB/sec ) Upload Speed: 1547 kbps (193.4 KB/sec ) ping 61ms

Looks like you need to call Tech Support as the issue must be elsewhere.

Tech Support is open 24/7 on the numbers below.

For help with your TV or Phone and for Broadband Technical Support:

Call Product Support/Faults on 151 option 2 from your Virgin Media Phone. It's absolutely free.

Or call 0845 454 1111 from any other phone line.

Moldova i am sick and tired of ringing them up as

A) the engineer(s) wasn't in the slightest bit interested

B) indian BB support is a joke

No one is interested except the lads at the Welsh and Liverpool BB support call centre and getting through to them is like phoning the Queen.

Can you clarify that a bit? :)

Full duplex only works when you have a cable going from your modem to the pc doesn't it?

Ignitionnet

Round and round this thread goes, where it stops no-one knows :)

Ping your modem (192.168.100.1) 100 times with 1460 byte frames, command line for this is ping 192.168.100.1 -n 100 -l 1460 -f, did you drop any packets? If you did and have duplex hard set somewhere it's mismatched - put everything back to auto-negotiation. If it now pings cleanly that's that link proven. If you couldn't ping at all due to df bit being set then check you've another issue.

Next, bandwidth. I reckon it's an issue with your Vista install, tried another machine?

Lastly going directly to modem, that ok?

Full duplex should only be used when auto-negotiation fails. You can confirm that auto-neg failed by setting it and looking at the modem and the router's status. If both don't say 100/Full then Houston we have a problem.

It's a bad idea to set full duplex on the modem only and not on the router and given that I can't see a place to set this on the WNR that seems bad. Best case you'll get 100Mbit half duplex, worst and most likely case you'll get 10Mbit half duplex :)

Well I have found when on Auto they are usually slower than on Full can you please tell us why as it usually just the 50Mb connections that this has any effect on.

You have better knowledge of these things and if you want you could either post it or PM me , thanks.;)

Ok this is what i got in the cmd:

Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set.

packets sent: sent = 100, Received = 1, Lost = 99 <99%>,

99% loss?!! enlighten me sir! and thx for the reply ;)

You have an MTU issue somewhere on your network - 1460 should go through just fine.

C:\Documents and Settings>ping 192.168.100.1 -l 1460 -f

Pinging 192.168.100.1 with 1460 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.100.1: bytes=1460 time=16ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.100.1: bytes=1460 time=1ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.100.1: bytes=1460 time=2ms TTL=63
Reply from 192.168.100.1: bytes=1460 time=1ms TTL=63

No I can't tell you - all auto-negotiation does is cause the two devices, when the ethernet cable is connected between them and they power up, to decide on the best duplex themselves via a burst transmission which is standardised. The bits set in this burst indicate what each side is capable of and they go to the highest one that both support, so the modem will indicate in its' burst that it's capable of 1000BASE-T gigabit ethernet, and prior to that that it's capable of 100BASE-TX full and half duplex and 10BASE-T full and half duplex. The WNR router will indicate that it is capable of 100BASE-TX full and ignore the bursts (pages) indicating 1000BASE-T support, they should agree on 100BASE-TX full duplex and that's it, it'll perform exactly as a hard set 100 full connection from there on in.

Once this negotiation is done speed really shouldn't matter as the devices should, in the case of the WNR and the VMNG, negotiate 100 full, and in my case they do!

WAN 100M/Full
Ethernet Link Status Up 100 Mbps/Full duplex

So basically it depends how good the machine is and obviously we only get the poor relations calling in.

As in very early XP machines with 386 processors with 128 of ram and only fitted with10 nics, not even 10/100 nics and they wonder why the 50Mb is slow.

I fuly expect a win98 cutomer on 50Mb to call in:D

hard to see but 2 top files are dl'ing each at 1.49mb and bottom 2 are at 850-90 kbps.

I just have to add a few things in case it helps people.
A few days ago I had trouble getting my xbox 360 to use media center via my network. Some website suggested that I change my network settings from Auto Negotiation to full duplex. Big mistake. Everything, from downloads to websites dropped to stupid speeds. Sometimes 25 minutes to buff a 5 minutes youtube video and results of 0.35mb/sec on speedtest. It was only this forum topic which reminded me and I changed it back to Auto Negotiation. Its alot better. Here are my results:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2009/08/17.png

Is that average for my 50meg?

And thanks for the info, it helped to solve my problem. :)
