View Full Version : V Stuff privacy and "unlimited" questions?

I have a few questions about V stuff:

1: How private is the data stored online? How is it stored and is it encrypted?

2: Is there any type of files/data that is not permitted to be stored?

3: Is it checked or monitored or does anyone other than yourself have access to it?

4: You can upgrade to "unlimited" storage for £5 per month. What does unlimited storage mean? Obviously not unlimited, but I can't find in the terms what the amount is.

5: What happens with existing webspace/ftp areas? Can this be extended to use more than the standard 50mb ? can you ftp to the V stuff areas?

Regards

vstuff uses a proprietary client installed on your windows PC.

It will only backup local internal drives. It won't even backup external USB drives.

I didn't get any further.

The web page uses AJAX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajax_(programming)) to upload files, there is probably an ftp hack you can use.

The application runs under Wine.

The transfer is very probably unencrypted.

You are not allowed t distribute copyright data, though when and how or if this is monitored I do not know.

I will have a look and try to answer the unanswered.

If you are concerned about privacy I wouldn't use it.
Do a local storage/backup instead.

Joxer I think you may be getting confused here. Ajax uses bog standard HTTP it's just that the requests are initiated from javascript within the browser rather than by the browser itself. It is nothing at all to do with ftp which is a completely different protocol.

AJAX uses whatever the person who wrote it decides upon., The source for the upload page is chock full of https.

AJAX stands for Asynchronous Javascript And Xml, however the only bit that is always true is the 'And' part, it does not have to be asynchronous, doesn't necessarily use Java and doesn't require XML (any markup language would do).

As for the ftp, i was guessing that you could upload via ftp (though you may need to use http or https), if you could figure out the login and address:port details, I did say it would be a hack.

Joxer, just so you know Java and Javascript are totally different things ;) Don't confuse them!

Privacy issues are easily dealt with: copy all the files you want to backup into a Truecrypt container and upload that to your VStuff area.

If the upload page is using Ajax then the upload is using HTTP which is a completely different protocol to FTP. You can't hack a way to use FTP to talk with a web server. Chalk and cheese.

I have a few questions about v stuff too.

Why, sometimes, does it refuse to respond to 'show' from the desktop tool bar? I end up reinstalling every time this happens.

Why does it persist in uploading the whole of my second internal hard drive when I only ticked a limited number of directories?

Why has v stuff been able to upload files from one of my usb external hard drives when everyone says it isn't supposed to do that? No I haven't confused my hard drives. lol

Why is v stuff so naff?!! I have done a complete reinstall 3 times now, completely refreshing local config.

When is the next, bug-free, version being released?

Sorry for hijacking this thread.
