Yeah, tell me about it. I've been ringing VM for months and all i get is that everything seems fine. How can it when i'm getting slow speeds?. It just seems nobody gives a crap. After years with Blueyonder/VM i'm seriously thinking of changing provider.

I'm in Derbyshire and have noticed exactly the same today, I'm lucky to see 5mb from my usually very good 20mb service.

Gonna keep an eye on this as there is absolutely no point in paying full whack for 20mb if I can only get 5mb.

Been having the same problem for the last two or three days.
(I'm in Warwickshire.)

Your Downstream is fine but what about the Upstream.

You cannot be getting traffic managed as your upstream is correct for 20Mb.

Do you live in an area that has been upgraded to 50meg? If you're unsure you can use the Virginmedia online postcode checker to see if 50meg is available.

What is your Upstream power level.

When did the problems start? Anywhere around the time of the 50meg upgrade? It could easily be related, I'd log a fault with them asap.

Your Upstream is fine so no problem there so the fault has to be elsewhere.

I'm getting anywhere from 1mbps to 5mbps (max) Download speed today....

I have the 20meg service and as the person mentioned earlier I have downloaded nothing in the last few days...

If you are thinking of moving to them from another ADSL service - DON'T!

In addition to that the helpdesk has put me on hold twice and I have been disconnected twice.

I'm going back to ADSL and getting a full refund from VM. They truly are hopeless...

Rubbish!

Yer i have no idea whats going on, but being limited to 5mbps for no specific reason it's a dam joke.
Not as if im one of these users who always hammers the connection.
But ADSL for me will be even slower due to the distance from exchange etc.

Ugh i hardly have time to phone virgin media and if they need to come into my house i aint booking a day off just to have them not turn up at the specific time etc.

They just admitted that there was an "equipment failiure" in my area - whatever that means. I am in the Tunbridge Wells area if that helps.

They just refunded me £10 for loss of service as i'm not getting the service I am paying for.

Maybe it's the upgrade to 50mbps as Ro52ben suggested. I'll keep an eye on it for the next few days and see if it improves.

They should at least warm people of this sort of work but I guess they're relying on the majority who don't use it very much not even noticing.

It's amazing how much we rely on Internet access nowadays and it really sucks when it's not working.

So yer out of the STM period my speed goes still normally stays at 5mb/s im lucky to get 10mb/s
This makes no sence on the STM times my speed drops to like 4mb/s then outside of it, i still dont get the full speeds :(

Random question
Is it possible someones cloned my modem or something.

Not sure mate - maybe one of the other members will have some more information on this kind of thing.

In the mean time I would definately kick up a fuss with them to make sure that you get a refund for your loss of service.. Maybe you could push them for a replacement modem as well.

You should not have to pay full price for a service that is one quarter to one half of the speed it should be.

Well its now slowed down again! Looks like im phoninh VM when i get in from work
Right now im getting about 7mb/s in the morning and when it hits the magical STM period in the evening it goes to like 5mb/s or lower.

Yay for my magical connection - http://www.speedtest.net/result/493379697.png

See these are my router logs from the last few days (i did have more but lost them when i reset router) Now its set to store them in NVRAM.

Date Download Upload Total
2009-06-11 0.03 GB 0.01 GB 0.04 GB
2009-06-10 0.49 GB 0.07 GB 0.55 GB
2009-06-09 0.13 GB 0.06 GB 0.19 GB
2009-06-08 0.98 GB 0.06 GB 1.04 GB
2009-06-07 2.15 GB 0.16 GB 2.31 GB
2009-06-06 0.09 GB 0.01 GB 0.09 GB

As you can see its not that much, i aint even hardly downloaded anything!
It really does not make any sence as when it's STM period my speed drops to like 5mb/s sometimes yet the upload stays at the same for the 20mb connection!!!
Yet sometimes i get my full 20mb/s.

Try this tester:

I find it more consistent than speedtest.net

Well i just phoned VM to log two faults this time.
Ones for my phone line crackling
The other for the internet

Want to know whats sods law, i phone up to log the internet and it works bloody fine and the guy could not see anything wrong :( But anyway they have sent a tech out to look at my phone and internet as well.
Apparently it requires two different techs!!!

Well the enginer guy arrived, and apparently replaced some connectors, but could not find anything wrong with the internet!
So why the hell am i getting bloody between 3mb/s and -5mb/s most days during day and evening! Strangely during the STM period!
Kinda makes me wonder why i pay for 20mb/s connection........

EDIT
Sometimes i manage to pull 8-9mb/s

Mine seems OK now for the most part - although I notice that the traffic shaping definately happens sooner than they suggest on their web page.

I also suspect that things like torrents are shaped by traffic type. Yes I know that it all depends on the seeds but I noticed a clearly poorer performance on Torrents.

Also, if you are using newsgroups and have paid them for a fast connection to usenetserver or similar try changing the port numbers and also increase the number of connections to 10 or even 20 in newsbin pro (if you have paid for that many).

Hope they sort it out soon for you mate.

Well it's still doing it!
Im at 5mb/s i downloaded a game of steam but no where near enough to get STM and im getting 5mb/s after 10pm!!!
http://www.speedtest.net/result/495830889.png crys!!!!!

Ugh this is so stupid. Im gonna test my connection daily and write a log book and see whats going on!!!
