Hey,
I had all 3 services installed yesterday (install took 4 hours!!) and everything is great, i can download with multiple connections to newsgroups at the 50. But sometimes surfing pages it seems sluggish? Just wondering if someone could comment on my config pls? Bit worried power levels are too high?:)

Downstream power levels should be just fine. On the edge of the +/- 7 that I'm told is preferred but if your link is stable I wouldn't worry about it.

Upstream power is pretty high, but clearly you're getting the required speeds from the link.

The sluggishness isn't out of the ordinary, many have reported intermittent slowness. Where are you based?

not sure if this is relevant but ive noticed that if downloading at the max 49-51mb on usenet for over 5 mins then it knocks me down to 2mb/sec untill dl is finished. However, if i pause my dl even for 1 sec it will jump back up to the max? Wonder if any1 else has the same? ive tried using astra and giganews.

We've had similar reports about large downloads from file sharing services.

It's almost like there's some traffic management in place.

switched to the eu giganews and it seems to max out all the time now, ssl and 20 connections.....
also iv scrapped the netgear router and web browsings doesnt seem as sluggish at times... might be a temp fix tho. ill report back in a couple of days. shared it from a 2k3 sbs server instead.
speedtests seem fine too..

hi - did the sluggishness stay away when not using router? having similar issues

Quick point FYI 40dBmV upstream transmit power is actually on the lower end of the range, it being 28 - 55 with 32 - 53 preferable.

hey yeh the sluggishness did stay when not using router. But for the past couple of weeks now really ive not had 1 major problem. I do find sometimes that from newsgroups i have 2 either use 20conns or between 7-9 which is odd but meh.

My upsteam power is usually 39-42. down is pretty much borderline 7. Probably not ideal but if its not broke then...

Well i had a vm techy pop in this morning as i was told 7 for downstream was way 2 high, its now about 1/1.5. He said that it should be between -4/4....

As I am aware that UBR has had a few issues I am on that UBR and my 20Mb connection is up and down due to SNR levels been low.

Ah right ok,thanks for letting me know, i never seem to drop connection. Speed is running solid now at 6000kb/sec, doesnt seem to drop speed like it used to.

He is on a Cisco uBR and you are on a Motorola BSR, it just depends what equipment Virgin have installed in your area for 50Mb.

Thanks for the explanation.

Are there advantages or disavantages to being on a Motorola? just wondered if one is more futureproof than the other? does one perform better than the other?

Ta.
They are both brand new for 50Mb and if your area has BSR's then it is immaterial about performance as they will not be changed either way and both are capable of providing more than enough bandwidth.

Good to hear but 58dbmv is rather high but if stable then no problem.

That's as high as those modems go, so it won't take a lot for it to be quite a long way from perfect.

Raise the issue with tech support via the newsgroups they'll get a tech out to lower that for you.

When it goes wrong, I will get a tech, until then, it can stay as it is. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
