heres the situation, i have two computers and i want them both hard wired to the modem, problem is the modem is out of reach as one is upstairs and one is down.
i have two connection points upstairs and downstairs ( white co-axial cable)
so i was thinking is it possible to run a modem off each line?

if anyone could help i would be very grateful before i go wasting my money on a modem that wont work lol

thanks for any replies in advance :)

Welcome to the Forum. :)

No, what you need is a router. You plug your modem into the router and then plug both computers into the router.

If you have cable broadband then this router will do the trick. Link (http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0464913885.124359894 1@@@@&BV_EngineID=cceladehghlgdkecflgceggdhhmdgmh.0&page=Product&fm=13&sm=1&tm=1&sku=954069&category_oid=).

If its an acceptable option for you, you will be able to connect the computer that is furthest away from the modem via a secured wireless connection via that wireless router.

Also just to point out you can't go and buy another modem and just plug it in as this won't work!

As far as i am aware, VM only permit one modem per residence. Is a wireless router plus 2 wireless cards/donges out of the question?

Just get either a wireless routor or a wired routor with a LONG ethanet cable.

thanks for the replies but i already have a wireless network set up, should of stated that really.
i've noticed my LAN computer seems to perform better than my wireless laptop on the internet, i also have my xbox downstairs so i wanted to lan that for better connection whilst live.

and as one of the replies says i cant have two routers in one household then i guess i may have to move the modem downstairs and have the computer as the wireless station which i didnt really want to do, but the only other solution is a mile of ethernet cable which just isnt very practical...

Why do you need miles of Ethernet cable? Just run one ethernet cable from upstairs router and then plug it into an unmanaged switch, something like this (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/35437). Then you can have more devices attached as you add to it. Failing that you could always go down the homeplug route such as these (http://www.ebuyer.com/cat/Wired/subcat/Homeplug-Adapters)

The home plug as mentioned above really are good - I have 4 Netgear 200Mb/s units - 2 are used to take the signal from the modem to a wireless router - 2 others are used to take a static route from the router to another room via the electrical circuit. The lowest speed via the homeplug I have seen using the supplied config software is around 85Mb/s
