Hi there.

Hopefully someone can help me with a problem i have been having.
Whenever i download rar files about 60% of them are corrupt. I have to delete and redownload them sometime it can take 3 times before they will work.
I have 3 hard drives (internal and external)
20mb connection
I have formated my system + reinstalled xp. Have tried with and without virus software.
Have updated to the latest versions of winrar to extract.

Could this be a problem with my line ? I have been downloading rar files for years and never come across this problem before.

thanks

Is this from newsgroups? If so then it could be the Yenc settings on your news reader.

Use Par2/PAR files for the mean time until you get a chance to try another news reader

If not from newsgroups then no idea

It could be the rar files them selves, but you said they work on the third time of downloading. Maybe there is a problem with the server which is hosting them and as there being sent they are corrupted. Do you have a link to one that you have found that is corrupted so I can see if I'm having the same trouble too?

Maybe it could be a problem with a server on the VirginMedia network that the data passes through in order to reach your home.

is there any tests i can run on my pc/router that would show up any problems ?

I second Kymmy's idea of try opening the par files with quickpar (windows), or macpar (mac)

Hope this helps, also try using newsgroups.

I had a similar problem on one PC which was a self build, found the reason was corrupt memory. Download memtest86 and check this.

I don't know if you use newsgroups, but if you don't and want to, let me know and i'll tell you which usenet and grabber i use, (not sure if i can mention the name on here) i'm on 50mg b/b and d/l films in about 1 min 30 secs, most with par files.

We have intermittant problems from rapidshare too - I just put it down to a problem at Rapidshare but if you try the same file the following day then its fine.

I believe you are going through a router. If yes, try disabling the "SPI Firewall" and reboot the router. It should resolve the problem.;)

How much RAM have you installed?
Virtual Memory?

From memory (no pun intended), slightly dodgy memory can give errors that tend to show up when decompressing zip/rar type files.

So it might be worth running a memory test if you've not already done so.
I beleive Vista has it's own tester, otherwise memtest and memtest 86, both available either separately or as part of the ultimate boot disk are good.

I have a similar problem. When I use Vista or Win7, I get corrupted files all the time. But when I use Xp, I almost never get a corrupt file. I dont understand why.

Not Virgin related from what I can see so why posted in this section as definitely not within the Virgin support scope.

I posted this here because i download these files using virgin media connection, and looking at things today its the connection.
My two friends brought there laptops around my house for a test and everyone of us had 60% of our downloads corupt.
When downloaded again on there internet no corupt files.

Can anyone tell if there is a problem with the power on my modem ?
Ill copy some info to see if anyone can spot any probs,

*Wonders pensively if there's a dodgy ethernet cable connecting modem to router, and when direct to PC it wasn't as bad.
