Hi all just registered after finding this forum.

Right I got connected to Virgin broadband on friday morning I took out XL with M phone.
For where I am I should be seeing speeds of 19.5mb which I did do on the first day and during early hours of the morning but during the day it's up and down according to speedtests that I have been doing.
Going from 3mb to 14mb

Here is my best result using speedtest which I took on friday
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2009/05/29.png

And here is what I am getting today

Date of Speed Test: 2009-05-25 17:00:50
Download Speed: 7633 kbps (954.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

Upload Speed: 721 kbps (90.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

http://speed.io/pics/2056/1835/speed.io.png

Right the speeds are alot better than what I was getting before down the old BT line but I am still paying for 20mb.
I downloaded a 90mb file from Xbox live earlier and if I download anything bigger I do it after midnight.

Is there a 10 day training period?

What can I do to get this sorted out?

Thanks in advance

Dave

You cant really compare your speedtests as they were tested with different sites/services.

To get help you can call Tech support on 150 free from your Virgin line or post for help on the news groups. Instructions on the webpage below.

There is no training period for cable broadband. It is of course a contended service, so slowdown during peak times is common.

It could also be STM, if you find yourself constantly maxing out at 5Mb: http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

I don't think it could be STM as the OP has said there speed is varying from 3Mbps to 14Mbps.

Try rebooting your modem as well (and router if you have one).

Post what modem you have and your power levels from your config pages of your modem. The should be a sticker on the bottom saying what model.

If using an Ambit modem please click here
http://root:root@192.168.100.1/CmOpConfig.asp

If using any other modem click here

What I want you to post is the Downstream power levels including the SNR and the Upstream power levels for me thanks.

DO NOT POST YOUR MAC ADDRESS OR SERIAL NUMBER

I can't see how it I could be throttled as I do not even get near the amounts on their Traffic management policy, I have downloaded quite alot about 6gb since friday but it has been after 12am each time.

Upstream is rather high and a call to Tech Support may be in order to get an engineer out to sort it.

Hi thanks for your reply

Would that power level affect my actual connection in anyway?

I have got to go out now so I will phone them when I get back to see what they say.

Here is my test as of now

Ok phoned up about the power levels and got told that it's fine and within it's target.

I can only assume my speeds are low at times due to a busy exchange and other people downloading.

If you got told that by an Indian, it was just to get you off the phone and close the call. Generally, Moldova knows what he's talking about. I'd keep calling back till you got someone with a nice UK accent.

If you look in the "Sticky Threads" department and seek out the one headed "Cable Modem Signal Levels" (Link (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/26006-cable-modem-signal-levels.html)) you will find:

Upstream Transmit Power: Anything between 28dB and 53dB is fine. Up to 55dB is also fine so long as it's fairly stable. Above 55dB suggests issues. Depending on your modem connectivity is jeopardised when transmit power hits 58dBmV or in the case of Pace set tops 61dBmV.

It can cause issues similar to what you report, if no improvement ring after 0800 tomorrow morning.

Ok it has gone down to 54.5 and goes up and down every few hours. My speeds have been ok though and I have not noticed or had any problems so far.

Onto another topic my dad has 10mb virgin and always complains of low speeds though he hits around 7Mb, His problem seems to be with loading up webpages

I checked his router and his download power stats where -4.3
I rebooted the router and it was still the same when I had left
Am I right in assuming it should not be -4.3?

Thanks in advance

Hi thanks for the reply.

That's good news for him then lol.

Well I wish I had not said my speeds where ok because they are not

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2009/05/12.png

Rang Virgin and got told that my exchange is pretty full and other people are downloading so I am losing the speed, However if I test in the morning I should be ok.

Shame I need my connection now for gaming.
