I'm looking for a bike for the little 'un - been looking at this one (from a local shop not this site)

Read good reviews of the Hotrocks - anyone got any recommendations?

How does one evaluate a kid's bike?

Looks cool? Doesn't fall apart? Takes training wheels?

What are you looking for in this bike?

well those 3 really :)

basically we want something sturdy, a reasonable make, meets bike standards rather than toy standards (as is the case with a lot of 'bikes' from toysrus and the like) - and isn't going to fall apart on him

Specialized are one of the top brands for bikes. In adult bikes it equals thieve magnet. I'd say that by brand alone it should tick all the above boxes. The only risk you have is coming across as a snob for buying your kid a Specialized bike...

Fall apart on him?
I suspect he will have grown out of it before that happens. ;)
