Never heard of the books myself, but they sound quite interesting, & HBO has a good track record for quality TV.

I've read a couple, they are intricate political books set in a fantasy and magical land.My husband enjoyed them more than I did which as he's not really into fantasy all that much was a surprise.

I started to read book one but lost interest early on due to the way the story was written but I may just dig the book out and try again.

A later update to your link shows that HBO still seem to be interested

Update: 10 September 2008
GRRM has confirmed that HBO have exercised their option and now own the television rights to A Song of Ice and Fire. Whilst this doesn't mean that the show is in pre-production or 100% go, it is a very significant step forward, as money has exchanged hands.

ROFL, I didn't realise the article was so old - I copied the link from a thread at DS which I now realise is from 2007 & simply got bumped this week!

Ooops...

However, according to the post at DS which bumped the thread...

The books are very hard to read but I suspect that they may well work better as a visual drama..:erm:

No surprise with HBO but it's been renewed already...

I really liked the first episode. Definitely going to keep watching.

If there's anyone else like me who felt they could do with more info on the characters & the backstory, but don't want to risk Wikipedia etc. due to spoilers, then have a read of the official Viewer's Guide on the HBO website...Loads of info, without (presumably) giving too much away.

Episode 2 is now available, for those watching in pace with the US.

For those at CF who have Sky Atlantic, episode 2 will be shown tonight.

Watched about 25 minutes of the first ep so far.

Looks good. Seems like a more adult version of Merlin in some ways, but enjoyable none the less.

Good to see a largely British cast.

Also, the sets are amazing. The music lends it a nicely "Epic film" type feel, and the acting is good.

Nice to see Lena Headey acting as well..

Second episode very good indeed. There really are some nasty slimely charectors.

Difficult to choose a side so far

Very good second episode. My only issue with the series so far is that it isn't always very clear how much time has progressed. Great cast & sets, though, and an extremely interesting story.

Oh, & the opening titles are brilliant. Really well done.

I'm really enjoying this so far. As much as i enjoy high fantasy games, books etc, few TV shows have done anything for me but this has outdone my expectations.

I found it a little amusing to see a former Hollyoaks actor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roxanne_McKee) suddenly pop up as a Dothraki slave.

Yep, some quite shocking scenes as well - a beheaded horse.

At the end of that scene it was more or less expected that the horse was in for a one way ticket to the glue factory, but that was shocking (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpQ-tOGXZiU)
I think this weeks joust has topped last weeks in gore :D

Great episode. Halfway there, now.

I've started reading the books. I finished "A Game of Thrones" last week, & I'm now halfway though book 2, "A Clash of Kings". Brilliant. Can't put them down.

Almost finished the second book, can't wait to see some of the new characters on screen.

The finale to season 1 was brilliant and I loved every second. I particularly liked the last scenes at Castle Black.

Finally managed to catch up with watching GoT after a few busy weeks.

Brilliant series, I can't wait for season 2, and I'll probably pick up the first few books next week.

Seems the theme is popular too, with a number of different takes on the original http://blastr.com/2011/07/11-stunning-and-often-odd.php
