Advice on a car?

I am going for the tests very soon and hoping to pass of course :D

I know its a bit premature but I been looking at cars. Call it the excitement.

I have really got my eye on a Ford Focus. I have always liked them. Not looking for a brand new one. Perhaps a 1999 one or 2000.

What would be a decent price for one? Would prefer a 1.3 engine.

Also what are peoples opinions on these?

Get an old banger to start with £750 motor will do, if you crash it (likely as most people who just pass has a knock or 2) there wont be much loss.
After a year or 2 experience then get a decent one.

I did do a insurance quote on a 1.3 Focus I found on Auto trader. First year for me was £650. I was expecting about £1000 or similar.

Best thing I did was get my Pug 306's! On my 2nd now (first was free and fell apart, so I can't complain, 2nd one is solid and cost £500). Never had a problem engine wise with either of them. Just be weary of electrical issues with French cars!

When I first passed I went for something cheap but fun... Ended up with a small little Suzuki SJ410...totally gave me brown knickers moments when I took my first corner in it (they're high up and tend to roll quite a lot).. but the 4x4 came in handy, I removed the two rear seats and made a little bikini top for it... All for less than £300 (in fact we sold it for £350 ;))

Another thing to check is the emissions, anything after 2001 (and more stricter after 2006) will be taxed based on emissions... Could be the difference between paying £200+ tax or less than £100

Good luck with your Focus Central, I've had a new Fiesta since last June and touch wood not had a single thing go wrong with it. Find yourself a good independent garage and look into ways to make your car insurance cheaper such as advanced driving tests, only using car during daylight hours etc. Check if your bank account can offer your free RAC/AA cover as most do now.

Yes, but you can upgrade so recovery is from home etc for a small fee.

Something else which is important is to consider what type of miles you will be doing. Do you intend to use motorways regularly, in which case would it be worth getting a diesel?

Corsa diesel or a Focus diesel. Both good on tax and insurance.

IMO i would never buy a super cheap banger (car), get one which will actually hold up in the event of an accident. The focus is a 5 star car and are fairly cheap at the moment. I just traded in our 04 Focus 1.6, they said it will go up, at a main dealer for about £3600, so you would probably be able to pick up a 2000 one for under 2k.
Also remember that it's a buyers market, i got a 2006 Mazda 6 Sport for 2k under list price :D, o and £320 a year insurance :p:

Don't always be fooled by the "smallest engine is best" theme with insurance companies. My brother went for a quote on a 1.0 corsa (at 20yrs old) and it was going to be over £1200. He then went for a quote on an Astra 1.6 and it was less than £800.

Also - I'd stick to the post-2001 cars if you want cheap tax (astra 1.3 diesel or a 206 1.4 HDi are good examples of motoring for £35/year tax :) and both are good on insurance costs too). We never had an issue (electrical or otherwise) with our 206!

A hint would be to put a parent on as a named driver if they have good driving records (and preferably your mum) :) works wonders for your risk factor :D
