My girlfriend got caught speeding by the police a couple of years ago on a motorway and got penalty points. She wants to know when can you get rid of the points and will it be completely removed (no trace back)?

Will DSA send her a letter to remind her that she can get rid of the points?

Thanks

I didn't get any reminder and they stayed 'active' on my licence for 3 years, and then 'inactive' for a further year IIRC.

5 years, and they come off automatically.

Did you have to send your licence to DSA? How much did you pay for it, to remove the penalty points?

Thanks

Are you sure, I was told you have to send your license to DSA.

I haven't had them removed, as my licence doesn't need changing but it does state the date so I know on the computer they are no longer there.

I was in the process of moving at the time I got them, so they got added when i renewed my licence anyway.

Yup me too, they were active for 3 yrs, but stayed on my license another year. Still have them there though, never sent license back cos I couldn't be bothered.

To have them completely removed you would have to.

I got mine in Jan 05 and they are no longer on my record, so i presume so.

So if she don't send her license, they could still trace the points back, so it's better to send it to them?

How can she know for sure when to send her license(date)?

The date she got them will be on her license, so removal 4 years later.

Excellent, thanks.

So you have to send it to DSA 4 years later and not 5, correct?

Correct.

Here is the link to the DirectGov site with all the relevant periods.

You will find that the average period points stay active on a licence for minor offences is 4 years and can be removed 12 months later.

Oops - i stand corrected. Thanks Moldova, you've made my day :p:

So just say for example, you have 3 penalty point and you get rid of them after 4 years and you get 11 penalty point for something; as their is no trace back of previous convictions = no ban (11+3), yes?

Car Insurers ask if you have had any convictions in the last five years (for motoring offences).

The 3 that are 'spent' wouldn't count towards the new 11.
It's different if you are a new driver though.

If your a new driver, you get banned at 6 points...

(First 2 years)

4 years from the date of offence, I've just had 3 points took off.
