I am on 20Mb and its not very often i get it, i Live in nottingham on exchange Basford3. As soon as it hits 4pm my speed drops straight down to 2Mb or less.

Is anyone else having this problem as well?
Because to be honest VM are starting to get right on my nerves, all i ever get when i ring up is "Over Utilisation On The Network" this has been going on for about 8 months now apparently.

I would be gratefull if someone could shed some light onto this situation because other providers are sounding very good at the minute.

Thanks

Hi,

To be honest, VM don't seem to be doing much about overutilisation at the moment.

My UBR has has a problem since September 2007 and is still not upgraded...

Basically your choices are:

1) Put up with it and keep complaining
2) Leave VM
3) Hope that when 50Mb is rolled out in your area enough of the current 20Mb users upgrade or are moved to make your connection ok.

Sorry, but from where I am sitting and from conversations I have had with the CEO office upgrades are pretty much out of the question at the moment..

i've given up complaining i'm on 20mb but only get between 7-13 at any time of the day ,perhaps once a week i get 18-19
I really think trading standards should look into vm as it seems to me they promise to deliver a service but can't deliver and they can only hide behind the "upto"part of the contract for so long
i have decided to start taking speed test results over the next 3months and see if trding standards would be interested.

I do agree with you over trading standards as you pay for the 20Mbps and expect the service deliver to your agreement of 20Mbps.

I used to have 20Mbps but fed up of speed down to 8Mbps and downgrade to 10Mbps but so far, no problem on 10Mbps than the 20Mbps.

I only just hope that 50Mbps will be no less than 40Mbps as my main target or cancel it within 28 days.

i would downgrade back to 10mbs but i'm worried i will only 2-3mbs

then downgrade to 10Mbps then ! (they might put you into 12 months contract - check with them) that's what they did to me.

Here is my latest speed on my 10Mbps using powerline devolo homeplug 200Mbps: http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/results/03508845.png (http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk) https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2009/04/58.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Yeh i think i might do the same thing to be honest and record all my speeds from now on.

I have just done a speed test and this is what i ended up with bearing in mind in on 20Mb.
Download Failed (1) (http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk)

The thing that really annoys me most is when you ring VM you either get through to someone that doesn't give a **** or someone that dont understand
anything you are saying to them and they are still no hope.

I was honestly thinking long and hard about getting 50Mb when in becomes available in my area but i dont think there is any point,
as if they cant provide a service now then, why should i give them my hard earned money for a more expensive service.

Your speed upload is showing as you are STM !!!

i need a min of 10mbs though and i'm not worried about being tied to a contract as i'm quite happy with the tv and phone it's the internet i'm p***d off with

Yeah i know the feeling ! If my 50Mbps go live on 22nd april and if I getting less than 20Mbps on 50Mbps I will show trading standards of all my speed test proof on my past 20Meg, 10 Meg and will do 50Meg and compare to 10Meg is the best one than the 20Mbps and 50Mbps (if it wasn't full speed)

I can see the problem in your area because your ping is quite too high (that the reason slow down your download speed) I had that on my 20Meg before and the ping went from 50ms to 186ms and drop speed from 19.78Mbps to 1.7Mbps

I think u are better off with 10Mbps to be honest and save you extra £money

would you say the ubr is over subscribed? because i have raised this with vm before and they say it's fine

I know this sounds a really noobish question but what is STM?

telfordcable
13-04-2009, 23:24
If your ping went too high, look like your area is UBR overscribed.

Look at my 10Mbps the ping is good at 41ms before on my 20Mbps ping is awful at 186ms

please check speed test again www.speedtest.net and this time post here of London speed site (not dublin)

STM - is virgin media standard traffic management !

I have just done another speed test like you said and still not much better but the ping aint so bad.

The ping is fine, your not in UBR at all but you are in STM (because look at the upload speed) low upload speed mean you are in STM.

martyh

I know this sounds a really noobish question but what is STM?

stm is were vm manage your connection because you have downloaded to much in an 12hr period so they cut your speed back to approx a third of what it should be

in other words it's vm's way of admitting they can't effectively supply the speed they are charging you for

Shadz
13-04-2009, 23:56
If that is the case they have capped me for no reason i know today i have downloaded about 2.6gig i always thought it was 3 but after looking at the traffic policy it says 6gig which is obviously not right

i have no faith at all in vm's mangement software it is quite possible and likely that people are incorrectly being capped

I totally agree with you Martyh.

You can bet you bottom $ as well that no1 from Virgin Media will reply to this topic either
cous they know that it aint reliable either.

Why would anyone from VM bother? Firstly it's a publicly owned forum and not run in any way, shape or form by VM.
You have it all figured out without any troubleshooting.
No pings, no traceroutes or results from any file downloads.
Have you had it confirmed by VM that you are indeed being traffic managed?
Any first line agent can tell you in a few seconds if you are.

If it's shown you are being managed incorrectly it can and will be raised to the dept who deal with it.

IF that is STM, then it is the STM for a 10 Mbit connection, not 20Mbit.

If that is the case they have capped me for no reason i know today i have downloaded about 2.6gig

And the daytime limit for 10Mbit is 2400MB :erm:

Perhaps the OP should check his level of service ?

Like usuall now it has gone past 12:15 in i am getting a reasonable speed again.
And an even lower ping.

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2009/04/56.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

those speeds i can cope with but i am still gonna be on the phone to VM toomorrow morning to see if i am being trafic managed.

ok then will do

they might ask you to send them via email of your evidence proof of your bandwidth before they will look into this, if it was mistake by virgin media then they will take STM off you but they need your proof first.

If you haven't got any proof then virgin will not do anything for you. It happen to me and I told them "oh for the evidence proof, why don't you add the usage allowance via our customer care member site in my account" but they won't do it, ask me to use any third party software eg: ttb meter but I say to them "it no point because of my two's pc sharing and a laptop and how I gonna to work out my usage allowance on two pc's and a laptop using ttb meter?".

This is why I don't use speedtest.net - it doesn't agree with my laptop :)

http://www.speedtest.net/result/451844974.png

I'll stick with Think Broadband.

Date 14/04/09 12:30:13
Speed Down 12774.78 Kbps ( 12.5 Mbps )
Speed Up 717.87 Kbps ( 0.7 Mbps )

Kids are obviously at home, 60% performance at 12:30pm.
