I am on the 2mb package and It has been fine for years . Over the last 6 weeks speeds have been slow.I have been on to the helpline five times. They tell me that it is a known problem and will be fixed in a few days. This morning they are telling me that my speed is OK and that the speed tests I am doing are unreliable. The trouble is I don't believe them as it still seems slow. Is there a way I can test my speed.

Firstly there's a speed test link at the top of the forum...try that one and cut/paste the results..

If you can't see it upt here the URL is http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php

Thank,s KYMMY

Speed test says 560 Kbps which is about what other tests say. I am not sure ware to go from here as every avenue seems to lead to the call center. Any suggestions as to how I can get normal service resumed.

Try posting on the virgin media usenet groups, that'll bypass the Customer Support people and get you a more direct response from L2 Tech support people.. They'll be able to confirm if the UBR has problems or not and can even book a tech visit for you if need be.

The newsgroups can only be found via the virgin media usenet servers on a VM connection..more details HERE (http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginmedia/newsgroups/)

Are you directly connected to the modem or via a router (wirelessly or ethernet)?
If you are behind a router, try connecting directly into the modem - and also turn the modem off and reboot it.

Thank's for the helpful replies. The first time I contacted the helpdesk we tried various tests and determined the problem lay outside my house.I will get on to the usenet groups.

I find that I get a different speed reading depending on:

which location I am getting the speed test from (cable forum, speedtest.net etc)
Whether VStuff is running in the background uploading
Whether I am connected wirelessly or wired
Whether connected via the router or direct to the modem
To ensure that your readings are not being distorted, then you do need to connect directly to the modem and not via a router.
Check several sites for speeds as they can vary.
If you have a laptop or other computer, try both connected directly to the modem to check individually.

I am not saying there definately are not any speed problems, but you need to ensure that it's nothing your end first. In my case, having tried all this, I find the speed problems are more of my own problem with the wireless network rather than VM.
