View Full Version : 20MB Question
What speeds should I be getting (KB), when downloading from usenet with a 20mb modem?
Thanks
Highest peak value that I've noticed in Newsleecher is 2.34MBs or 2405KBs
over 2000kbs or 2mbs
Should it not be 20000kbs or 20mbs?
Thanks guys

Your looking at around 2400 KB/Sec for a 20Mbit line.
Your looking at around 2400 KB/Sec for a 20Mbit line.
So 2400kbs is the max on a 20mb connection, as i'm currently getting 1657.5 kb/s (max) with usenet.
When testing my speed with Giganews speed tester, I get: 17687 kbps.
Why is their an extra number/digit in the giganews speed test?
b = bits
B = Bytes
(8 bits = 1 Byte)
The maximum you will get on your 20Mbit/s line is about 2400KByte/s.
I've just spent 20 mins on usenet and the speed was varying between periods at about 1400KByte/s and other periods at 2400KByte/s.
I'm putting it down to contention.

Good info their Fobic, thanks.
So i'm getting 17687 kbps with Giganews speed tester, as that's in 'bits' (b), correct?
Cheers

Yes that's in bits. The absolute max after overheads on usenet is from my personal experience 19.65Mbit - 2400KB/s or 2.4MB/s

Thanks.
1 Megabit = 128 kilobytes.
20Mb = 2560 kilobytes.
So that means on a VM 20Mb connection, you will never get 2560 kB, max = 2400kB.

Well, that's an entirely different issue regarding Mebibits and Megabits.

A megabit, as tought and recognised, is actually a mibibit
