View Full Version : New 50meg Modem and reduced WiFi Speeds -advice?
Hey guys,
My UBR was upgraded recently and I was hitting nearly 20megs via WiFi - the new 50meg service is now available in my area and have booked an install and my new modem arrived yesterday - a bit fiddly to set up but after 1/2hr all was working well but my WiFi speeds dropped to 3megs and now if I want the 20megs I need to connect via Ethernet - any advice?
I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 Lappy.

The Dell Inspiron 9400 has a integrated wireless N adaptor - and may be outdated, try using the Netgear stick with the latest drivers.

I think he means the free one that comes with the free router supplied for free by vm.:D
It should be in the box with the WNR2000 router, and also you should have been sent the latest drivers on a cd.

All I was sent was the modem and nothing else.
my Netgear dongle was in the same box as the router
but the thing is pretty carp - speeds are not good

I didnt realise they were allowing self installs on the 50Mbps, if you have upgraded to 50 Mbps then you are entitled to a free wireless N router and adapter/stick.
Usually brought by the engineer on the day of install
If you havent recieved them then I suggest you get on the phone quick smart, I got them and everyone AFAIK on this forum who has upgraded has got them, so unless you have specifically requested NOT to recieve them, then there is no reason why you would not be entitiled.

If this was a self install then it will be in the "trial" area for self installs. AFAIK routers are not being supplied with your setup (there are other terms attached to your package as well).
Call back and speak to the team at Virgin and see if they can provide you with a router for a one off fee. Your probably didnt pay the install or activation fee's?

Thats a router, so you haven't got a new modem yet - the engineer will bring your modem (see link 2 above) and you won't have been put onto 50mb yet.
Ah ok - But the router is an "N" router though??

Go into the router config, set the wireless encryption to WPA2-AES. The netgear doesn't like anything other than that.
other Note Virgin do not do Self install for 50mb yet (at the time i was wanting it) as i found out when thay sent me the 20mb self install pack (big red box with norm router and norm cable modem) the modem you have got it does have green lights (20mb or lower) on it does it or is it Blue lights (50mb)

other notes with 50mb over 20mb useing wireless
make sure you only useing WPA2 on the router, the router is setup for performace on WPA2
WPA and WPA2 at the same time does work but some wireless cards will not connect to it, you only need this option if older devices can not connect to WPA2 or lack its support
WPA1 and wep can only do around 3MB/s (you need 2.5MB/s on 20mb ), WPA2 was doing 6-9MB/s (you need 6MB/s on 50mb) from my wired pc to wireless with the netgear USB dongle
allso you may be geting the problem that alot are getting when speeds drop to around 2-3mb (thats around 200-300KB/s) but that should only last for at most 5-10 mins then speeds should go back to full speed agane (around 5MB-6MB/s) seems to do that once every 1hr but can happen at any time

The routers in a lot of cases are still being sent prior to the manned install as the are no self install trials on 50Mb otherwise Virgin would be inundated with call about getting charged £80 for a manned install, I know only the £50 is the install fee.

That is correct as all 50Mb customers get charged that fee.
Ah ok cool - just emailed tech support via the Newsgroups to get them to post me a dongle!

However when I connect through the router - Linksys WRT54GS (with speed booster), and also a WUSB54GC stick, then I'm dropping at best to just over 10Mb.
Just tried it at the moment and several sites report 0.60-0.77Mb. (I suppose I ought to add a re-boot of the modem and router together then produce a more healthy 10.94Mb - still not in the 20Mb league though...)
Any ideas?

As you are on 20Mb though you can actually purchase the wnr2000 Netgear wireless N router we issue for 50Mb for only £25 from Virgin.

I told you above that is it free for 50Mb customers and gave you the link, this question is regards a 20Mb customer.
Thanks for all your advice - I ended up purchasing a Netgear Dongle especially for N Routers and I am back to downloading at lightening speed!

If the WNR2000 router isn't performance well on wireless then I will using devollo dlan 200 aveasy starter kit instead as this one is support up to 200mbps (hope it should performance well on 50mbps) just brought it today from pcworld as webprice online at £73.41.

To be fair to the Netgear, you get about 35mb realistically around the house, while in the same room it's about 40-45 peaking to 50 sometimes. It's not the best router on the market, that's why im keeping wired and wireless just for laptops.
