Hello again,

Must admit my 20 mb has been fine for about a 2 months so was expecting it to bugger up anytime soon. When I last checked the Virgin website it said there was no work going on in the Bolton area. Having trouble getting back to that part of the site to check or could someone in the know notify me if there is any work going on ;) not sure exactly what my area is but this should help cpc2-bolt13-2-0-custxxx.manc.cable.virginmedia.com

Here is some tracerts to uk websites I use never mind gameservers abroad, games are unplayable here with 500 ping and constant 40 pl again.

Is it strange to have such a high ping on the second hop?
Also this is not a constant lag its more reoccurant after 7 pm and lasting numerous hours. Tonight it started at 9pm and has not decresed so far.

I also tried downloading 2 large files from ftp://ftp.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyondergames/blueyondergames/. maximum speed was just about 2 mb although I am on 20 mb. On my home network there were 3 pc's connected but all were just broswing the web and not downloading apart from one.

Thanks in advance

Are you sure you don't have something using all your upstream bandwidth?

Pings like that only usually occur when a person is saturating their upstream. Check any wireless networks and PCs you have, it seems quite likely that the issue is a program on your PC or someone on your network using all the upstream.

Cheers.

Looks like the UBR is overloaded or you're running some form of p2p or utilising your upload in some way and its causing the high pings. I'd double check.

I do have wireless switched on but its password protected as far as I know and do have the ps3 connected to it, but it was not uploading or downloading to my knowledge.

thanks for speedy response. is there a way to check incoming and outgoing traffic off all the pc's and consoles without installign much?

No easy way, you'd need to have SNMP enabled on the router and a program to graph the traffic on the router on one of your PC's. Easiest way to check is look at the modem upstream light. If its going mad you're uploading a fair amount of data. Try turning the PS3 off, and check the wifi really is encrypted or half your road might be using it.

Pings are too extreme to be CMTS-based congestion. Even under critical levels of congestion you wouldn't be seeing these kinds of pings. Deffo something munching the upstream, and whatever is doing it is even waiting until after STM time - how thoughtful.

You are correct, seems some who said they"dont use" bit torrent anymore is telling porkies. Any tips on blocking ports, specificly the ones related to bit torrent on a netgear router?

tried blocking 6881 tp 6999 but its still downloading and uploading....

Nope - BT can use any port really. All you can do is see what you can do with the guy as BT itself is very hard to block. See if he'll be good enough to cap his upload to maybe 45kB/s - this should leave enough for your games.

Until STM hits then it'll have to be nearer 10KB/s or the same problem will occur. You don't need more than that to reach full torrent speeds anyway. If you limit it to 45KB/s you don't have enough left to max out the upload either way.

Thanks for the advice, although something I dont understand happened last night. I Logged out of the router without changing any settings and it seemed to hang for a bit. I then got

"The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading. The network link was interrupted while negotiating a connection. Please try again."

after that not of the comptuer could access the internet or even the router ip. I pinged the router address to see if I was still connected, although some pings were going through most of them were being lost so thougt it may have been a dodgy cable. Tried resetting router and cable modem to no avail, so this morning bit the bullet and pressed th tiny button to restore the router to its factory settings. Seem to be working ok again at them moment but do you think my router may be on its last legs?

thanks again

Im not in the Bolton postcode area my self but I believe my ubr is/or connected. So far I suspect the bad speeds are due to home networking issues so far.

How about giving some data back to those nice people who are uploading, it's about sharing not just the bare minimum to max the download.

FWIW I upload at 60kB/s on 20Mbit during times when connection is being used and it doesn't cause any issues with performance of browsing or latency. YMMV so 45kB/s is a nice safe value.

Those values were for 10Mbps, I didn't realise the op was on 20Mbps, not 10. Not sure why I thought 10, when it plainly says 20 in his post... :erm: Never mind eh! :D The values I wrote were in my experience for 10Mbps anyway, so they're probably about right.
